Leto, held in Sabiha’s hut at Shuloch, refuses Muriz’s ordered spice gruel and studies Sabiha’s fear-bound thinking. Recognizing her people’s dependence on absolutes, he chooses a vision-thread that demands a terrible transformation. He leaves for the qanat at night, intent on a decisive step toward the Golden Path.

At the water’s edge, Leto attracts migrating sandtrout and deliberately coaxes them into a living membrane over his body. Drawing on prescient knowledge and Bene Gesserit control, he prevents rejection, creates a self-repairing stillsuit-skin, and drinks its sustaining syrup. Testing this new form, he discovers amplified strength and speed and a capacity to shape the membrane around his mouth for moisture conservation.

Crossing the qanat, Leto faces a captive worm at arm’s length; the creature senses only sandtrout and does not attack. Exultant, he demonstrates his control to a stunned Sabiha, then scales a cliff with inhuman agility as ’thopter-armed men approach. He leaps down the escarpment and races into the Tanzerouft, outpacing pursuit by burrowing and bounding from dune to dune.

As dawn nears, Leto hides beneath the sand, accepting that he is no longer fully human. He resolves to raid outlying settlements—Gara Rulen, Windsack, Old Gap, Harg—smashing qanats to roll back terraforming by a generation. This sabotage will be blamed on rebel tribes, overtaxing Alia, while Leto secures time to impose the Golden Path that will harden and preserve humanity.
