Overview
The Preacher publicly delivers four targeted warnings to Alia, Stilgar, Irulan, and Duncan, then condemns Muad’Dib’s priesthood, hinting at Paul’s return. Alia, rattled by his authority and the crowd’s reaction, reconsiders her power’s fragility, resolves to remove Irulan, pursue the Baron’s plan against Jessica, and have the Preacher watched and discredited.
Summary
At midday, The Preacher, guided by the boy Assan Tariq and carrying a simple black gauze mask as disguise, enters the square below Alia’s Temple. Alia watches from a hidden slit, torn between fear and curiosity, and recalls fractious Council debates over Corrino gifts and Jessica’s status. She worries about rumors of her order to seize The Preacher and about Stilgar’s growing doubts.
Mounting the Temple steps, The Preacher announces four messages. He warns Alia that she has sold her future, tells Stilgar a rigid code will exile him, urges Irulan to flee humiliation, and advises Duncan Idaho not to trust history but to act decisively. Alia, shaken yet immobilized, hesitates to summon guards.
The Preacher then preaches against the priesthood’s “ecumenism of the sword,” accusing them of replacing love with holiness and courting desert vengeance. He invokes prophecies and rejects myths around Muad’Dib’s prescience. His voice and fearlessness intensify Alia’s suspicion that he is Paul returned.
As the crowd does not move against him, The Preacher departs unhindered. Alia, feeling her grip on the Imperium slipping amid Landsraad, CHOAM, Fremen, Guild, Bene Gesserit, and Corrino pressures, reviews Bene Gesserit warnings about restive populations finding leaders, recognizing chains, and sensing escape.
Calming herself with the inner Baron’s counsel, Alia decides Irulan must be disposed of, reaffirms the scheme to eliminate Jessica while discrediting House Corrino, and postpones direct action against The Preacher. She resolves to keep doubts about his identity alive, have him watched constantly, and seize any chance to expose and discredit him.
