Chapter 5

Jessica’s transport sets down at Arrakeen before a massive, silent crowd. Wearing a Reverend Mother’s aba, she surveys changes to the city and Paul’s colossal fortress, recalling her past. Seeing Alia approach with Irulan and Stilgar, Jessica reads unmistakable signs of Abomination in Alia and steels herself.

Jessica steps alone onto the ramp, raises her arms in benediction, and the crowd kneels. While she holds their attention, Gurney Halleck and allied agents—coordinated with Stilgar—sweep through the throng, killing fleeing suspects and arresting laggards. The display cements control and yields prisoners for interrogation.

Descending, Jessica pointedly favors Stilgar, who approves the decisive action and declares loyalty to Muad’Dib’s children. Alia confronts Jessica in anger but masks it when challenged. Jessica then faces Irulan, who confirms the twins are at Sietch Tabr for safety.

Priests press for Jessica’s Lustration at the Keep. Jessica evaluates the leaders—Javid and Zebataleph—judging Javid dangerously clever and useful. Testing them with “priestly nonsense,” she gauges reactions. Calculating leverage, she spares Javid, deciding he could serve as a conduit into the priesthood despite being Alia’s man.

To consolidate influence, Jessica limits her official party, selects Javid to accompany her, and agrees to the ceremony, granting him a small victory while marking him for deeper cultivation. Gurney signals interrogations have begun, and Jessica moves forward, confident the twins are safe and that she has begun to penetrate Alia’s power base.
