Overview
Percy hacks through the arai but is overwhelmed by accumulated death curses, including Phineas’s gorgon-blood torment. As he nears collapse, he recognizes Tartarus’s true nature and confronts his guilt toward Bob and Calypso.
Percy apologizes and pleads for Bob to protect Annabeth; then the arai before him suddenly explode, shifting the battle’s momentum.
Summary
Percy initially mows down the arai, but each kill triggers a new curse. Pain mounts—burns, stabs, chills, and tics—while more demons swarm. Exhausted and half-blind, Percy tries to reach Annabeth, who staggers among the monsters, isolated by curses.
An arai bites Percy’s leg. When he destroys it, Phineas’s curse ignites inside him, mimicking gorgon-blood agony. The arai taunt him, betting on his death as heat and poison ravage his body. Percy realizes Tartarus’s true nature: the air as its breath, monsters as blood cells, the landscape a dream of the Pit.
Confronting despair, Percy admits his failures toward others—Bob, Nico’s earlier help, even Calypso—and rejects surrender. He apologizes to Bob and begs him to protect Annabeth, deciding he won’t die and leave her defenseless. He forces himself upright, steaming and shaking, determined to fight.
Before Percy can strike again, the arai massed before him suddenly explode into dust, abruptly turning the tide and implying unseen intervention in response to his plea.
