Overview
Nyx assembles her terrifying brood and boasts that only through her Mansion of Night can mortals reach the Doors of Death. Annabeth manipulates Nyx’s children into competing over who is darkest, plunging everything into blinding chaos. Exploiting the distraction, Annabeth and Percy leap toward the distant doorway.
Summary
Nyx cracks her whip and summons a host of her children—arai, Geras, Eris, and many other night-spawned beings—surrounding Annabeth and Percy. Annabeth fights panic by reframing the horror as a “tour,” steadying herself and Percy. She and Percy continue their mock-tourist act, refusing to show fear.
Provoked, Nyx boasts of her power and reveals that the Doors of Death lie at Tartarus’s heart, reachable by mortals only through her Mansion of Night. She points out a black marble doorway far below, the route Annabeth and Percy need but an impossible, deadly jump away.
Realizing she must create an opening, Annabeth goads Nyx by asking for a photo with her “favorite child.” The question inflames rivalries. Eris and Geras claim supremacy, and the brood escalates, each trying to prove they are the darkest, flooding the abyss with absolute blackness.
Their competition blinds even Nyx, who loses control as her children bicker and scuffle in the pitch dark. Amid the chaos, Annabeth squeezes Percy’s hand and signals their move. Despite Percy’s misgivings, Annabeth orders the jump, and together they leap toward the distant doorway into the Mansion of Night.
