Overview
Percy stops Annabeth from stepping into the River Acheron, whose voices assault them with guilt and accusations. Pursued by Nyx’s children, Percy carries them in a desperate leap across the river.
They emerge before Tartarus’s pulsing heart and the army around the Doors of Death, where Bob and Small Bob rejoin them. The trio prepares to use the Death Mist to infiltrate the enemy.
Summary
Percy yanks Annabeth back from a ledge as she nearly stumbles into a chasm. Using his senses, Percy identifies a river blocking their path and warns Annabeth to keep her eyes closed. The water’s roar is laced with agonized voices that accuse them of murder and failure. Annabeth recognizes it as the River Acheron, the River of Pain, which dredges up her guilt over past deaths, including Zoë Nightshade, Bianca di Angelo, Michael Yew, Silena Beauregard, and especially Luke Castellan.
The voices try to break their resolve, insisting Annabeth share the damned souls’ fate. Percy, hearing the same condemnations, concludes the river forms the boundary of Nyx’s territory. With Nyx’s children closing in, he tells Annabeth to trust him. Annabeth wraps her arms around his neck, and Percy makes an impossible twenty-foot leap, splashing through stinging brine but landing them safely on the far side.
They open their eyes to a vast valley under poisonous clouds, the ground pulsing and scarred like a colossal heart—Tartarus’s heart. In the distance, an immense army of monsters surrounds a pinpoint of darkness whose pull Annabeth can feel: the Doors of Death. The pursuit has ended; even Nyx’s minions won’t cross Acheron.
A skitter of rock reveals an ally: Bob the Titan, battered but cheerful, with Small Bob purring on his shoulder. Bob reached them by a “diagonal” route fit for Titans. Reunited, Annabeth and Percy decide to rely on the Death Mist to hide as they approach the army. With their goal in sight and Bob at their side, they set out toward the Doors of Death.
