Overview
Hazel embraces her power over the Mist, staging Jason’s apparent death to lure Sciron into overconfidence, then reversing the scene so Jason can hurl Sciron to his own turtle. Exhausted, Hazel is visited by Pluto, who praises her and warns that Pasiphaë awaits in a deadly maze at the Necromanteion’s lowest level.
This solidifies Hazel’s arc and sets the quest’s next target and method: defeating Pasiphaë by showing her what she wants to see.
Summary
Hazel commits to a plan: let Sciron “win” while she manipulates the Mist to show him what he expects. Jason plays along, kneeling to wash Sciron’s foot at the cliff’s edge. Hazel projects Sciron’s desired reality, summoning an illusion as convincingly as treasure.
Under the illusion, Sciron kicks Jason into the sea, and the giant turtle seemingly devours him. The Argo II panics, but Hazel maintains the deception to keep Sciron complacent, then maneuvers him until his back is truly to the sea though he still sees water ahead.
When Sciron kicks Hazel, she lands safely on grass, breaking his illusion. Hazel orders, “Stand and deliver,” and Jason, alive and airborne, body-slams Sciron over the cliff. The turtle eats Sciron instead. The crew cheers; Hazel, drained by the Mist, collapses to her knees as frost spreads and the conjured riches sink.
Pluto manifests, flickering between Roman and Greek aspects, and commends Hazel’s strength. He warns that in Epirus, at the House of Hades, Pasiphaë plans to rebuild her domain. He reveals the Doors of Death lie at the lowest level of the Necromanteion and advises Hazel to make Pasiphaë see what she wants—key to surviving the sorceress’s maze.
As Pluto fades, Hazel challenges him about not reclaiming her to the Underworld. He replies ambiguously that perhaps that is not what he wants to see—perhaps he was never there—leaving Hazel with affirmation of her power and a clear, perilous objective.
