Overview
Leo explores an idyllic island and discovers it is Ogygia, home of Calypso, still imprisoned despite the gods’ promised amnesty. Calypso reveals her curse to fall for stranded heroes and the vanished escape raft. Realizing the gods have closed Ogygia, Leo declares he’ll engineer a way off the island.
Summary
Leo stumbles into a breathtaking garden with orchards, herbs, and a crystal-columned cave that smells of stew. He spots a girl angrily gardening and tries to approach without startling her. The girl, tearful and furious, tells Leo to leave and laments that he cannot die on the island.
Seeking answers, Leo learns she is Calypso of Ogygia, daughter of Atlas, long imprisoned for aiding the Titans. She explains that heroes have been sent to her for millennia—Odysseus, Drake, and most recently Percy Jackson—each stirring her feelings before inevitably leaving. Despite the gods’ post–Titan War promise of amnesty, she remains trapped, and Percy’s departure left her hope crushed.
Inside the crystal-lined cave where chores perform themselves, Calypso admits the worst insult: the gods have now sent Leo, whom she resents as unworthy and as another reminder of her curse. Leo, stung but determined, says he’ll leave without her help. Calypso reveals the deeper problem: the magic raft will not appear because the gods have closed Ogygia entirely, trapping Leo as well.
Confronted with the gods’ cruelty and their shared imprisonment, Leo refuses to accept defeat. He declares he will engineer a way off the island, setting up a conflict between divine constraints and his ingenuity.
