Overview
Annabeth and Percy plunge into the Mansion of Night and navigate in total darkness, refusing to look at Nyx’s domain. Guided by a terrifying heartbeat and the sound of water, they race for an exit while Nyx’s brood scrambles behind them. Annabeth speeds up, but Percy halts her before a fatal misstep.
Summary
Annabeth and Percy land hard after leaping into the Mansion of Night. As they run, Annabeth’s slowed, panicked thoughts spiral to her own obituary before she forces herself to focus on survival.
Above, Nyx and her children bicker in the darkness, but Annabeth closes her eyes and relies on sound, touch, and smell to guide them. She warns Percy not to look at anything, trusting that viewing the Mansion’s horrors would destroy them. Percy agrees, following her lead.
They chase a deep, ominous throbbing that reverberates through the floor and grows stronger, joined by the flicker of torches and the scent of smoke. Annabeth senses fresher air and the sound of flowing water ahead, believing the exit is near, and she accelerates.
At the last moment, Percy stops Annabeth, preventing a catastrophe in the unseen dark. With Nyx’s brood receding behind them and an egress close, they narrowly avoid disaster as they continue their blind escape through the Mansion of Night.
