Overview
Koios confronts Bob, trying to rekindle Iapetus’s Titan loyalties and revealing the giants have already passed through the Doors of Death. Shaken, Bob chooses Percy and Annabeth, leading them across Tartarus’s pulsing heart toward the Doors.
They discover Hyperion and Krios guarding the exit, raising the stakes for their imminent attempt to escape.
Summary
A Titan in Stygian iron approaches: Koios, who hails Bob as his brother Iapetus and mocks his servant’s garb and broom. Koios reminisces about restraining Ouranos and Kronos’s fall, trying to hand Bob his past and stoke vengeance against the gods and the demigod who erased his memory.
Koios boasts that the Earth Mother will favor Titans over giants and reveals the giants have already passed through the Doors to the mortal world, with Polybotes leaving last. He departs to rouse his daughter Leto to vengeance and mentions two more Titan brothers guarding the Doors, alarming Percy and Annabeth for their friends’ safety.
Percy and Annabeth gauge Bob’s turmoil as he questions whether to accept the identity handed back to him. Percy urges choice and change; Annabeth insists Bob is better now. Moved, Bob affirms their friendship and leads them onward across Tartarus’s pulsing heart, where veins carry the Underworld’s rivers—danger that underscores their urgency amid prowling hellhounds and circling arai.
They crest a ridge and finally see the Doors of Death, ringed by a dense horde. Titans Hyperion and Krios stand guard—Bob’s other brothers. Acknowledging the peril but offering no promise of victory, Bob urges haste as they prepare to push toward the only exit.
