Overview

An unnatural freeze grips the Argo II as Nico returns with Diocletian’s scepter, heightening tensions and secrecy. Piper reflects on visions of Clytius and reinterprets the prophecy: storm or fire must bring down Gaea. The insight raises stakes, implying either Jason or Leo will die to secure victory.

Summary

Piper, Leo, and Jason face a sudden July freeze at sea, with ice crusting the Argo II. Nico suspects Diocletian’s scepter is to blame and takes it below, though Piper senses a larger, darker cause. Hazel is seasick; Frank escorts her below. Coach Hedge retreats, rattled by the scepter and preoccupied with Mellie.

Left on deck, the original trio reflects on how the quest has changed them. Piper recalls shared worries with Hazel and her own visions in Katoptris: a pale sorceress weaving golden light, a shadow-wreathed giant extinguishing torches, and a cavern teeming with enemies.

Concerned about Clytius’s darkness snuffing fire and light, Piper raises the Prophecy of Seven. She questions the line to storm or fire the world must fall. With Jason’s help, she reframes it to mean Gaea—the Earth—must fall to storm or fire, not that storm or fire will destroy the world.

Katoptris shows Clytius advancing through darkness as Piper voices her fear that only one of Leo (fire) or Jason (storm) can succeed. She links the idea to an oath to keep with a final breath, implying the victor over Gaea will come at the cost of the other’s life.
