Overview
Percy and Annabeth reach Akhlys, the ancient goddess of misery and poisons, and find Hercules’ shield with her. By goading Akhlys’s pride, they convince her to grant the Death Mist so they can pass unseen to the Doors of Death. Bob cannot accompany them, and the pair follow Akhlys into the fog, accepting dire risks.
Summary
Percy, Annabeth, and Bob approach a weeping, dust-caked goddess in a lighter patch of Tartarus fog. Bob calls her Akhlys, and Percy is overwhelmed by despair at her presence. Across Akhlys’s knees lies Hercules’ battered shield, painted with her likeness. Akhlys claims the shield came to Tartarus after Hercules’s death and insists misery overtakes all.
Annabeth challenges Akhlys, calling her a minor goddess and mocking her power to provoke a reaction. Percy joins the goading. Enraged yet intrigued, Akhlys declares the Death Mist is for shrouding mortals in misery at death, not helping them, and offers poisons instead. Percy and Annabeth argue that helping them will increase suffering for Tartarus’s monsters when they seal the Doors of Death.
Akhlys relents, explaining the Death Mist only manifests when mortals are closest to death, clouding their eyes and fading the world. She says survival is unlikely but agrees to show them the way. As she shuffles off, Percy realizes Bob has vanished; Akhlys says he cannot take this path because he is not mortal.
Accepting the risk, Annabeth takes Percy’s hand. They trade grim humor about a “next date” in New Rome, then follow Akhlys’s footprints through poison flowers and deeper fog to experience the Death Mist, leaving Bob and Small Bob behind.
