LVIII
Overview
Jason confronts Auster, realizes he must choose his own path, and commits to the Greek side. Transforming Auster into Notus by choosing, Jason asserts leadership, tames four South Wind venti horses, and secures a tow for the Argo II toward Valletta, Malta, to reunite with Leo. Notus warns of a coming choice between storm and fire.
Summary
In the sweltering, storm-lit hall of Auster, Jason waits for guidance about Leo’s disappearance and permission to leave the harbor. Auster rambles about his fickle nature and past conflicts, then challenges Jason’s indecision, pressing him to choose a direction rather than drift between loyalties.
Jason confronts his internal struggle—duty to Camp Jupiter versus belonging at Camp Half-Blood—and decides he must choose his own legacy. Declaring they will depart immediately, he demands help and asks for venti horses to pull the Argo II and lead them to Leo.
Auster summons four volatile South Wind horses of fire, sand, and storm, daring Jason to control them. Jason consciously chooses the Greek aspect, shifting Auster into Notus and burning away the storm within the horses to pure sirocco.
Emboldened, Jason lassoes each ventus with ropes of wind, bringing the team under control. Notus approves, affirms Jason’s chosen path, and directs him toward Valletta, Malta, assuring the horses will no longer be needed upon arrival.
As Notus fades, he cautions Jason to remember him when the choice between storm and fire comes again. The venti bolt for freedom, and Jason departs to harness them to the Argo II, setting course to find Leo.
