XLVIII
Overview
Under the Death Mist, Percy and Annabeth are attacked by Akhlys. Percy discovers he can manipulate poison like water, nearly drowning the goddess in her own venom until Annabeth pulls him back from the brink. Akhlys flees and the poison dissipates. The abyss answers: Nyx herself manifests, escalating the threat.
Summary
Akhlys strikes first, raking Percy despite the Death Mist. Percy, sluggish and insubstantial, distracts her while Annabeth uses agility to buy time. Annabeth’s daring moves falter when Akhlys grabs her, forcing Percy to draw the goddess away with mocking compliments that physically distress the embodiment of Misery.
Akhlys responds by bursting venomous plants, flooding the ground with poisonous ichor and choking fumes, isolating Percy. Cornered, Percy realizes poison is liquid and gambles that Tartarus’s rules will let him command it. Something inside him “cracks,” and he halts and reverses the toxic tide.
Percy drives the poison back toward Akhlys, intensifying her tears and coughing, and nearly drowns her in her own venom. Annabeth, horrified by Percy’s ruthlessness, pleads for him to stop. Percy regains control, opens a path, and orders Akhlys to leave; she flees and the poisonous growths evaporate.
Shaken, Annabeth begs Percy never to push that power again, warning some forces shouldn’t be controlled. As they withdraw from the cliff, the abyss exhales and a vast feminine darkness speaks. The presence identifies itself as Night—Nyx—confirming Akhlys intended them as a sacrifice and elevating the danger to a cosmic scale.
