Overview

Annabeth and Percy plunge through darkness into Tartarus, confronting despair and the enormity of the abyss. Spotting a black river below, Annabeth signals Percy, who summons a geyser to break their fall. Their survival shifts the quest’s stakes: they must now navigate Tartarus itself to endure and reunite with their friends.

Summary

Annabeth plummets through darkness, clinging to Percy and fearing Hesiod’s nine-day fall to Tartarus might be true. Her injured ankle throbs, and she blames Arachne’s silk for dragging her into the pit, pulling Percy with her. Accepting that demigods rarely get happy endings, Annabeth confesses her love to Percy, expecting death.

The air grows hotter and sulfurous as the void turns gray-red. The chute opens into a colossal cavern vast enough to hold Manhattan, with red vapor, black plains, jagged mountains, fiery fissures, and tiered cliffs dropping deeper into the abyss.

Below, Annabeth spots a ribbon of black liquid and yells “Water!” to Percy. Despite terrifying tales of Underworld rivers, she urges this only chance. Percy, shocked but responsive, focuses and calls to the current.

At the last moment, Percy shouts and the river explodes upward in a massive geyser, swallowing them and cushioning their impact. They survive the fall, but find themselves within Tartarus, facing unimaginable dangers ahead.
