Overview

Akhlys leads Percy and Annabeth to the brink above Chaos, where the Death Mist overtakes them. The mist renders their bodies insubstantial—perfect for stealth but fatal without control. Akhlys reveals her betrayal, intending their true deaths. Percy’s weapon fails, leaving them defenseless as Misery prepares to strike.

Summary

Percy and Annabeth follow Akhlys through choking fog across a barren plain, missing Bob’s guidance. Poisonous plants sprout in the goddess’s footsteps until they reach a narrow peninsula jutting over a black void—the verge where Night meets the realm below Tartarus.

Akhlys explains they stand at the edge of Chaos, nearer to nothingness than any mortal. The void saps their breath as the Death Mist rises from their bodies. Percy and Annabeth see each other as withered corpses, their forms blurring and insubstantial.

Hoping the mist will let them pass unseen to the Doors of Death, Percy tests his movement and resolve. Akhlys reveals the truth: the Death Mist is not only disguise but a state preceding true death, and she intends for them to perish.

When Percy draws Riptide, the blade is only smoke and passes harmlessly through Akhlys. The goddess delights that, as mist-shadows, they cannot touch her. She extends talons and fangs, betraying them openly and preparing to kill them while they are powerless.
