XLIX
Overview
After Khione’s attack, Leo regains consciousness mid-fall and hastily engineers a one-use helicopter with the Archimedes sphere, crash-landing on a remote island. There he meets an exiled, cursed girl on Ogygia who tries to send him away with a magic raft, but it fails to appear.
The malfunction hints at divine interference and forces Leo to follow her inland, tying his fate briefly to the island’s mysterious rules.
Summary
Leo regains consciousness while free-falling over open sea, remembering Khione’s taunting before he was blasted skyward. With seconds to spare, he rigs a makeshift helicopter from the Archimedes sphere, canvas, and parts from his tool belt, slowing his descent toward a small, isolated island.
The contraption explodes near the beach, flinging Leo into the sand but saving his life. He retrieves the scorched yet intact Archimedes sphere from a smoking crater filled with wrecked furniture and dinnerware—evidence the beach had been set for a meal.
A girl in a white Greek dress appears, furious that he destroyed her dining table. She curses the gods—Zeus, Hephaestus, and Hermes—and demands Leo leave immediately. Leading him to the shore, she has Leo say he wants to leave Ogygia, explaining a magic raft should appear to take him anywhere.
No raft materializes. The girl, calling his arrival a mistake and decrying her exile and curse, grows more upset and storms inland. Hungry and stranded, Leo secures the sphere to his belt and follows, partly for supplies and partly to provoke the prickly island hostess.
