Overview

Percy and Annabeth position themselves to cut the Doors’ chains while Bob distracts Hyperion and Krios. Before they strike, an explosion annihilates both Titans. The Death Mist vanishes, revealing Percy and Annabeth, as Tartarus himself manifests, consumes the Titans’ remnants, and declares he will personally destroy them.

Summary

Percy and Annabeth stealthily circle the chained Doors of Death, timing their strike while Bob confronts Hyperion and Krios. Annabeth chooses Hyperion’s side, assuming he would sense Percy first. Krios stands on the anchor, thumb on the UP button, while Hyperion complains about guard duty and gloats.

Bob needles his brothers about their loyalties, recalling the Titans’ betrayal of Ouranos and their current submission to Gaea. The elevator dings for “Double Red,” further distracting the Titans as Annabeth and Percy ready to cut the chains. Bob offers to take a shift, prompting Hyperion and Krios to argue over who gets to leave first.

Just as Annabeth counts down, a piercing whine precedes a massive explosion. The blast scatters everyone and shreds Hyperion and Krios into dark fragments. The Death Mist collapses, revealing Percy and Annabeth. Bob survives the blast; Small Bob hides in his coveralls as a hollow voice shakes the valley.

The god Tartarus manifests in a colossal, armored form, drawing in the Titans’ lingering essence. He declares that the demigods have come too far and that he will intervene personally. The monsters roar, the Doors shudder, and Tartarus vows to destroy Percy and Annabeth himself, raising the stakes at the very threshold of escape.
