Chapter 58

Overview

Carl’s teleport-trap plan succeeds in bringing Donut’s totems into Ren’s desperate fight against Quan, turning Quan’s own card tactics against him long enough to finally kill him. The victory is costly: Chuluuna dies, Ren’s squad is devastated, and a wider catastrophe begins when Amayon, a Demon Prince of Sheol, enters the realm. Donut unexpectedly receives both stolen keys, but the damaged Havana exit gives the group only five minutes before one key becomes useless.

Summary

Carl teleports into Havana on top of a spider automaton and confirms Samantha has kept one spider inside her for the trap relay. While Donut fights duendes elsewhere, Carl positions a red emergency Loop-De-Loop trap as a backup to retrieve Donut, orders the other spiders toward the capitol, drinks an invisibility potion, and moves into El Capitolio Nacional de Cuba.

Inside, Ren’s squad is already battling Quan. Quan is floating near the ceiling, producing pox slugs and using summoned totems, while Ren, Chuluuna, and Garret hold the exit stairwell with fire, magic, and defensive cards. Carl plans to exploit Donut’s separate combat by teleporting Donut’s summoned totems into Quan’s fight, hoping they can attack Quan directly without being caught by Quan’s card-control tactics.

The battle is interrupted by a major world event: the Madre de Aguas succumbs to zombism, allowing Amayon, a Demon Prince of Sheol, to enter the realm. Fire spells are temporarily changed to Sheol fire, Carl receives an achievement, and Emberus’s quest updates with a chance to question Amayon about Geyrun’s murder. Carl has no time to pursue that because Quan continues pressuring Ren’s group.

Carl hits Quan with a sticky hob-lobber, weakening Quan’s shields, and Samantha latches onto Quan to distract him. Ren summons Basquiat, the Mongolian Death Worm, and makes it temporarily immortal, but Quan uses a consumable card to swap control of active totems. Quan gains the death worm, which consumes Quan’s former totems, kills Chuluuna, and begins attacking Ren while Ren scrambles to survive behind a temporary protective shell.

Donut sends in Jola the Yule Cat and a combined Lazarus/Skylar Spinach totem. The death worm eats Lazarus, causing the split into stronger gold versions of Uzi Jesus and Asojano, who attack Quan with bullets, debuffs, and disease. Jola strips Quan of his clothing with Fashion Critic, exposing Quan’s missing-arm stump and a tattoo fragment, and Carl seizes Quan’s powerful cloak before Jola can eat it.

When Donut’s duende fight ends, Jola, Uzi Jesus, and Asojano vanish, leaving Quan blinded, unable to heal, and near death. Quan asks Carl to return not the cloak, but the simple ring Carl took from Quan’s severed arm, engraved “For Daddy.” Carl gives it back, Quan says his daughter would be ashamed of what he became, and Quan dies before Carl strikes. Donut receives credit for killing Quan and gets both keys, but the exit stairwell door has been damaged and will become unusable in five minutes, meaning the associated key will dissipate if they cannot act quickly.
