Chapter 17

Overview

Yemaya and Eileithyia appear in the restored temple, rewarding Carl’s group while also revealing how dangerous divine intervention can be. Yemaya gives Donut a powerful card but casually sends Bomo to the ninth floor, depriving the party of an important ally.

Eileithyia grants helpful boons, then secretly pressures Carl into a faction-war bargain involving Odette, Katia, and the ninth-floor protection vote. The chapter leaves Carl burdened by a covert divine alliance, worried about Sister Ines’s carding of Paz, and urgently seeking a cure for SlugPox.

Summary

After Sister Ines turns Paz into a card, Yemaya and Eileithyia fully manifest in the repaired temple. Their presence grants powerful temporary buffs: Yemaya removes mana costs and cooldowns from healing, while Eileithyia reduces damage against female opponents and greatly boosts female party members’ melee power.

Yemaya appears from the fountain as a siren-like goddess and is identified as a restored, locked deity and retainer of Eileithyia. Eileithyia appears as a sponsored alien goddess, touches Carl and Donut, and grants rapid healing. Yemaya mourns Anton’s death in her temple and says Ogun’s insult will be addressed later.

Yemaya gives Donut a mythical mystic card called The Thief, which can steal a card from another player, and offers to entice Donut into worship. Yemaya then rewards Bomo for rebuilding her shrine; when Bomo asks to be reunited with his friend The Sledge in Larracos, Yemaya instantly teleports Bomo to the ninth floor. Carl and Donut realize this is a serious setback because they needed Bomo’s spell to reach the stairwell.

Eileithyia grants the party a floor boon: protection from spiritual possession, faster healing, and increased constitution. She also assigns Carl a seemingly simple quest to kill five spiders daily, but privately reveals through an unmonitored deity message that the quest is a cover allowing further communication and rewards.

In the secret message, Eileithyia tells Carl to accept Odette’s future offer to become his Faction Wars team adjutant. In exchange, Eileithyia promises to secure the votes needed to turn off protections on the ninth floor, claims Katia knows of part of the bargain, and threatens destruction if Carl reveals the conversation. Carl silently agrees by saying he needs his SlugPox cured and messages Donut to get to a saferoom because he does not want her alone with Sister Ines.

After the goddesses depart, a newly restored ghommid NPC enters and worships Yemaya. Sister Ines loots Anton’s body and leaves without speaking. Carl and Donut see that the cemetery has transformed into shops, watch Ines return to Havana, mourn Anton and Paz, and head for Club Vanquisher so Carl can cure the revolting SlugPox before more slugs emerge.
