Chapter 42
Overview
Carl and Donut survive a chaotic double deckmaster battle against Tom the turkey shaman and Sharp-Elbows the ogre necromancer inside a collapsing turkey barn. The fight reveals increasingly strange AI behavior, shows the dungeon’s monsters suffering beyond the arena, and leaves Carl badly wounded after Sharp-Elbows whispers that he can end their starvation. Raul’s intervention and Donut’s Puddle Jump save Carl at the last moment as the barn falls into the ocean.
Summary
The chapter opens in the Iowa turkey barn with Carl and Donut facing two active deckmasters at once: Tom, a shaman turkey boss, and Sharp-Elbows, an ogre necromancer witch. Mongo is unconscious among thousands of strangely silent turkeys, so Carl drags Mongo back toward Donut while the birds peck at them. Carl learns that his Extinction Sigil no longer charms the turkeys during this boss event, and his bombs begin detonating prematurely because of the barn’s heat lamps.
Donut starts the card fight by summoning Skylar Spinach and using The Thief to steal a card from Sharp-Elbows. Tom summons a turkey-headed temple guard, while Donut and Sharp-Elbows each summon lizard-headed temple guards. The AI’s descriptions become openly hostile and erratic, and Carl realizes that his Extinction Sigil makes the lizard enemies hit harder. Tom then plays Idolized, turning all the barn turkeys hostile, and Ralphie, which dispels active magic and prevents Carl, Donut’s minions, and totems from casting.
With magic blocked and the turkeys swarming, Donut tries to bring in Shi Maria, but Sharp-Elbows immediately sends the totem back to the deck. Sharp-Elbows then summons the Worm Fulcrum, a sentient necromantic staff that functions as both a totem and a persistent mystic card. The staff raises the dead turkeys as zombies, creating a new wave of enemies while Sharp-Elbows and Tom continue pressuring Carl and Donut.
Carl decides the only way to survive is to end one deckmaster quickly. He activates Daughter’s Kiss, launches himself at Tom, and destroys the turkey deckmaster with a devastating kick. Tom’s defeat removes Tom’s totems and cards and returns the living turkeys to neutral NPC status, but the zombie turkeys remain hostile. The impact also destabilizes the barn, which begins sliding toward the cliff and breaking apart as Carl stores Tom’s corpse to prevent losing it.
As the collapsing barn tilts toward the ocean, Donut summons Lazarus A-Bang-Bang, but the heat makes Lazarus’s rocket explode early, scattering everyone and knocking Mongo loose. Carl saves Mongo, who wakes and escapes, but Sharp-Elbows slides into Carl and impales him on her venomous spikes, blinding him and nearly killing him. While pinned against Carl, Sharp-Elbows whispers that the monsters are starved when they are not in the dungeon and tells Carl he can satiate them all.
Raul appears and breaks the Worm Fulcrum, stopping the music and removing Sharp-Elbows’s last totem, then decapitates Sharp-Elbows. Combat ends and the deck resets, but Carl is gravely wounded, overloaded with debuffs, and dangling from the barn frame as it hangs over the cliff. Donut reaches Carl on Mongo, lands on Carl’s shoulder, and uses Puddle Jump to escape with Carl just as the rest of the barn collapses into the ocean.
