Chapter 36

Overview

Odette reveals she cannot serve as Carl and Donut’s adjutant because she is entering the dungeon herself through the Celestial Ascendency as the newly re-ascended goddess Nekhebit. The announcement reframes the interview as a public power move, leaving Carl anxious about Huanxin and Katia’s survival.

Forced to choose from the remaining candidates, Carl rejects the familiar Ripper Wonton and the Valtay-linked Drick. With Quasar’s strong approval, Carl selects Baroness Victory, a hardline orc judge with Skull Empire ties who claims her loyalty is to law rather than family.

Summary

After Odette says she cannot be Carl and Donut’s adjutant, Carl asks why. Odette uses the moment to announce to the audience that her show will go on hiatus because she has sponsored a deity and will enter the dungeon to attempt the Celestial Ascendency. Carl realizes the interview has partly been a staged press conference, and he worries that Odette’s move may anger Huanxin or endanger the deal to save Katia.

Odette reveals that her chosen goddess is Nekhebit. Footage shows another crawler group completing a quest by hatching an egg, after which a system message announces Nekhebit’s re-ascension. The goddess appears as a scarred, damaged Egyptian-vulture figure, and Odette frames Nekhebit’s origin as a story of betrayal and revenge. Carl notices a suppressed major notification, but the show moves on before he can investigate it.

Odette returns to the original purpose of the segment: Carl and Donut must choose an adjutant from three remaining candidates. The options are Ripper Wonton, a quokka media host Donut likes; Baroness Victory, an orc attorney and judge formerly of the Skull Empire; and Drick, a Dream elf with a Valtay worm and former crawler experience. Quasar clearly discourages choosing Ripper or Drick and strongly favors Baroness Victory.

Carl questions the candidates’ qualifications and possible conflicts of interest. Odette explains that Ripper is experienced but rigid, Baroness Victory is the most experienced judge, and Drick is qualified but new to adjutant work. Harbinger suddenly vanishes without explanation, briefly surprising the room.

Carl focuses on Baroness Victory because of Quasar’s reaction and asks whether he has killed any of her family. Baroness Victory admits Carl killed distant relations and members connected to her half-sister, Queen Ugloo, but insists Carl acted within his rights and that she can be impartial. Her strict legalism and the fact that others sued to keep her out persuade Carl, and he chooses Baroness Victory as their adjutant.
