Chapter 15

Overview

Carl’s group is trapped in a Celestial Thorn Room and forced to choose which Orisha shrine to restore, with each option carrying major rewards and punishments. Katia’s urgent revelation that Yemaya is the key to saving herself and Donut pushes Carl to defy the obvious choices and repair Yemaya’s shrine instead.

Donut’s improvised animated-armor attack helps defeat Asojano, Yemaya re-ascends, and the ghommids are cured, completing the settlement quest. The victory is costly: Carl contracts SlugPox, Anton and Paz are marked for Ogun’s smite, and Ogun’s arrival threatens the group immediately after their success.

Summary

Combat begins when Asojano accuses Anton of betrayal for holding part of Ogun’s shrine. The ghostly goddess Oshun appears and charms Carl and Anton, promising protection, riches, and healing if her shrine is repaired. Donut realizes Carl is being influenced, and Carl breaks his own finger to clear his head.

At the same time, Katia privately messages Carl with urgent news: she has the Crown of the Sepsis Whore on her head, and the only possible way to save both herself and Donut starts with resurrecting Yemaya. The room freezes and the AI identifies the chamber as a Celestial Thorn Room, forcing the group to choose one of seven shrines to repair. Each shrine offers different rewards or consequences, but repairing anything other than Ogun’s shrine will bring Ogun’s smite down on Paz and Anton.

When the countdown ends, Anton remains drawn toward Oshun and throws Ogun’s shrine piece outside, making Ogun’s repair effectively impossible. Carl chooses to trust Katia and orders Bomo to assemble Yemaya’s blue shrine pieces. Donut executes their planned “Phantasm” tactic by stripping Bomo’s scrap armor with Laundry Day and animating the scattered metal with Legionnaires of the Damned, creating a swarm that attacks Asojano.

As ghommids surge toward the entrance, Carl blocks the door with a blessed chock while Donut, Mongo, and the animated armor hold the room. The other gods tempt the group: Legba offers protection from smites, Oshun promises healing, and Inle whispers that he can heal Carl’s inner damage. Paz and Anton try to repair Legba’s shrine, but Asojano’s green attack hits them with a painful divine mark, knocks down their work, and destroys most of Donut’s animated armor.

Bomo finishes Yemaya’s shrine, and Carl decides to capture or finish Asojano by stabbing him with a flag as the boss’s health collapses. Asojano turns into a card, but Carl is infected with SlugPox. The remaining animated daggers carry the Sun of Reawakening to Yemaya’s shrine, completing the repair; Yemaya re-ascends, the Pueblo de los Olvidados quest completes, the ghommids are cured, and the temple transforms into Yemaya’s Club Vanquisher entrance.

Victory immediately creates new crises. Carl’s SlugPox produces hostile, escalating slug monsters from exploding boils, while Paz and Anton continue losing health under Ogun’s shunned marker. Paz says they need the All Healer inside Club Vanquisher, but Donut cannot enter, and as Carl tries to get the men to safety, the system announces that Ogun has appeared in the realm.
