Chapter 53
Overview
Carl, Donut, Samantha, and Mongo race across Cuba to stop Quan Ch from killing Sister Ines and escaping with her key. The floor’s final phase begins with new key rules that turn Flee cards into forced key transfers, making every remaining exit attempt a dangerous card battle.
A rare Eye in the Sky spell exposes Carl and Donut’s location, increasing the pressure as they head toward Imani and the stairwell conflict. Carl also reveals a desperate backup plan to save Imani by sacrificing their key and relying on his jacket’s bone-key ability, underscoring how brutal their choices have become.
Summary
Carl returns briefly to the saferoom to retrieve Samantha, then leaves with Donut and Mongo without waiting for the official announcement. Because Sister Ines is headed toward the same stairwell area, Carl believes Quan Ch will kill Sister Ines, take her key, and immediately escape to the ninth floor unless Carl and Donut reach Quan first.
In the Cuban town of Guanajay, Carl prepares a Harley Davidson motorcycle while Donut mocks the vehicle and its cultural associations. Carl explains that Katia tuned the motorcycle and that skill gained from the goblin copper chopper makes riding it manageable. Samantha enthusiastically rides lashed to the handlebars, while Donut rides Mongo alongside Carl.
The crawl announcement begins the third and final phase of the floor. Cascadia states that stairwells are open and that crawlers without keys have been placed near stairwell locations where someone else has a key. Final conflicts will be card battles, and a new rule makes the Flee card dangerous for keyholders: if a keyholder flees, one key automatically transfers to the opponent. Keys also can no longer be voluntarily dropped or transferred, forcing anyone who wants to give up a key to do so through battle.
Carl angrily rejects Cascadia’s framing and drives east. Soon after, Carl and Donut receive a warning that their location has been pinpointed by the Eye in the Sky. Mordecai explains by message that the effect is a rare level-ten tracking spell or scroll that reveals Carl and Donut’s location and level across the area, so Carl speeds up and stays alert for Quan, who can fly.
Imani reports that Quan is no longer inside the church and that a large battle is shaking the area outside, which Donut identifies as the crabs and seals. As Carl, Donut, Samantha, and Mongo race through empty roads while avoiding enemy dots, Donut asks what will happen if Imani cannot get a key. Carl says he will force Imani into a fight, have Donut use Flee to transfer their key to Imani, and rely on his jacket’s mysterious bone key benefit to open the door, even if it costs him the jacket and one of his bones.
Donut worries that Carl needs both the jacket and his bones, then asks whether they will have to fight friendly crawlers. Carl admits he does not want to, but he recognizes that survival will force worse choices and more losses before the floor ends.
