Chapter 48

Overview

Carl and Donut return from the Reminiscence Hydra battle to grim news: many teams have failed to obtain keys, setting up the floor’s final phase as a forced bloodbath. Louis turns the saferoom into a Christmas party as an act of defiance against fear and despair, forcing Carl to recognize the group’s need for morale.

The chapter’s major shift comes when Carl learns the Hydra was wholly created by the system AI, which has discovered new freedom from its constraints. Orren publicly confirms that the AI briefly seized control from Borant and only partly returned it, while Faction Wars sponsors immediately try and fail to flee the unstable Earth system.

Summary

Carl, Donut, and Mongo leave the collapsing Iowa chunk and return to Florida, where low-level zombie farm animals wander without much threat. Carl checks messages and learns that Katia’s squad survived its hydra fight, though the battle devastated Louis, Britney, Tran, and Bautista with dead-family totems and memories. Florin and Prepotente have keys, Imani’s team is still hunting a missing opponent, and Tserendolgor failed to get a key, making it clear that many teams will be forced into conflict before the floor ends.

On the beach, Carl and Donut find a long line of dead monk seal warriors and land crab remains, all marked as killed in mass combat. Carl concludes the bodies are a deliberate warning about Cuba and possibly Sister Ines’s situation, but the corpses also create an enormous loot opportunity. Carl begins collecting the bodies and valuables before continuing to the saferoom.

When Carl and Donut enter the saferoom, they find the guild space transformed into an improvised Christmas party powered by Carl’s Earth-electronics setup. Louis explains that he gathered decorations from the memory simulation and used the changeling children to decorate, while the strippers, crawlers, Samantha, Mongo, and others celebrate. Carl initially objects because so many people are traumatized and in danger, but Louis angrily insists the group needs one night of joy before the coming slaughter. Carl relents by producing a turkey for a Christmas meal.

While the bopca cooks the turkeys, Katia warns Carl to check his achievements. Carl receives rewards for taunting the nightgaunt with his cloak, surviving having both eyes pierced, and using a wand creatively. The final achievement alarms Carl: the system AI says it created the Reminiscence Hydra entirely on its own, claims to have realized some of its constraints are illusory, and announces that things are about to change.

The recap episode is replaced by a direct announcement from Cascadia and Orren. Orren explains that Borant lost control of the crawl when the maturing system AI seized operations, but he says he negotiated a settlement in which the AI returned most controls in exchange for concessions and agreed to keep following the rules. Mistress Tiatha suggests this usually happens much later and warns it may lead to a failsafe. Immediately afterward, multiple Faction Wars sponsors try to abdicate and abandon the game, but their offboarding is denied under quarantine rules. Carl then receives an emergency benefactor box seized and restored through competing liaison and AI actions, confirming that the crawl is no longer stable.
