Chapter 3

Overview

Carl opens his remaining reward boxes and receives several practical upgrades, but the major prize is The Scavenger’s Daughter, a divine back patch for his jacket. Once attached, it dramatically strengthens Carl while adding risky new mechanics, especially Soul Reaper and a one-use Bone Key that could solve an impossible lock at terrible cost.

The chapter also checks in on allied crawlers after the previous floor, showing powerful new gear alongside grief, trauma, and severe injuries. Donut’s sudden outrage over the squad flag shifts the scene back to the floor’s faction spectacle and ends the chapter on a comic reveal.

Summary

Carl opens his accumulated reward boxes in the saferoom while Donut, Samantha, Mongo, and Mordecai watch. Most adventurer boxes produce useful consumables, including healing, mana, wall-phasing, and invisibility potions, while the Tina quest reward matches Donut’s free Town Upgrade coupon. Other boxes yield a magical prison tattoo kit, a peace-symbol jacket patch, another mercenary coupon, a Cosmic Buff potion for Mordecai to examine, and a divinity-themed nipple ring.

Carl’s higher-tier boxes provide more specialized gear. The legendary Scourge box contains gold, crafting table upgrade coupons, and Doctor Ratchet’s Automaton Build-It Kit, whose parts match recipes Carl stole from the production facility. Carl also receives a stronger reflective buckler bracer and replaces Katia’s old auto buckler, setting the discarded item aside for their Faction Wars team.

The Celestial Predator Box produces only one item: a divine, unique, fleeting back patch called The Scavenger’s Daughter. Because Carl’s Enchanted Anarchist’s Battle Rattle gives stat bonuses for every patch attached, the back patch has major potential, but its powers remain hidden until sewn on and worn. Mordecai encourages Carl to equip it despite the risk that divine items can behave unpredictably near gods or demons.

While Carl sews the peace patch and the divine back patch onto his jacket, Donut criticizes his stitching until Carl distracts Donut with her social media board. Carl notices an unexplained hired-mercenary dot in Mordecai’s room, and Mordecai admits he hired a room attendant after upgrading his quarters but avoids giving details. Meanwhile, messages from allies reveal that Florin has a shotgun upgrade, Katia has a speed item, Li Na has a robe upgrade, Tran has lost his legs and received a floating wheelchair, and Britney remains devastated after Firas’s death.

When Carl finishes attaching The Scavenger’s Daughter, the patch activates. It doubles all patch stat benefits, adds large Dexterity and Strength bonuses, creates a Soul Essence bar, alerts Carl when deities enter the area, and grants Climb, Soul Reaper, and Mysterious Bone Key. Mordecai is especially impressed by Soul Reaper, which stores essence from melee kills for a powerful later strike, while Bone Key can open any lock once at the cost of destroying Carl’s jacket, the patch, and one of Carl’s bones. The chapter ends when Donut bursts in outraged because the squad flags for the floor have been designed for them, not by them, and Carl laughs when he sees the flag.
