Chapter 69
Overview
Carl’s desperate attempt to empower Amayon nearly fails, but Paz Lo unexpectedly kills Ysalte and stops the quest timer with seconds left. Carl triggers Martyr’s Path, igniting his Sheol-enhanced footsteps and helping Amayon begin the spell to return home while demons swarm the ruined FOCSA building.
The victory comes with new dangers: Paz is marked for death by most deities, the card battle remains active, and Carl’s allies are trapped amid attacking demons. Carl tries to bargain with Amayon through Emberus’s message, but Amayon refuses to help and throws Carl and Samantha toward the fire.
Summary
Carl arrives headfirst inside Samantha’s neck hole while trying to force his Martyr’s Path benefit to trigger. Carl needs to drop below 5% health so his footsteps ignite with Sheol-enhanced fire and empower Amayon, but Samantha’s burning interior and the violent motion around Carl leave Carl at 7% when the countdown seems to expire.
As Carl begins to believe the plan has failed, the timer has actually stopped with two seconds remaining because Paz Lo has slain Ysalte. Donut explains that Katia gave Paz an arrow-like object, Paz stabbed it into Ysalte’s eye, and an explosion focused on Ysalte’s neck decapitated the goddess. Paz receives credit for the kill and becomes marked for death by nearly all deities, while Ysalte’s worshippers suffer a permanent Despondent debuff.
Carl finally activates Martyr’s Path after dropping to 2% health, and the Scavenger’s Daughter enhances the fire. Carl realizes he and Samantha are trapped in Amayon’s hand while Amayon repeatedly punches himself under Donut’s spell. The card battle remains active because demons are swarming FOCSA, and Imani and Tran are trapped in debris while other crawlers and totems fight across the damaged building.
Donut shouts at Amayon through her microphone and bargains for Carl and Samantha’s release. Amayon shifts Carl and Samantha into his other hand instead of dropping them, and Carl sees the city burning from every place he has stepped outside, with Sheol fire below and demons climbing toward Amayon to escape with him.
Despite the chaos, Carl sees that Amayon has begun casting the spell to return home, meaning the empowerment plan has worked at least enough to start the process. Carl tries to leverage that success by delivering Emberus’s question about his son, Geyrun. Amayon says he knows what happened to Geyrun and will tell Emberus only if Emberus helps kill Amayon’s three brothers.
Carl asks Amayon to order the other demons to leave Carl’s friends alone in exchange for delivering the message, but Amayon refuses. Amayon says Carl helped kill Ysalte, the mother of Amayon’s child, so they are even, and declares that Carl has already served Emberus as a martyr. With Donut’s spell expired, Amayon tips his hand and dumps Carl and Samantha toward the Sheol fire.
