Chapter 39

Overview

Carl, Donut, and Mongo defeat the sixth token guardian at the base of the dirt mound, but the fight reveals that even poorly built enemy decks can become lethal if their cards align. Donut unveils Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang, a powerful and unstable combo totem whose destructive strength impresses and worries Carl. After claiming the sixth token, Carl chooses caution, planning to return to the saferoom before climbing the eroding mound toward the remaining fights and the key.

Summary

Carl, Donut, and Mongo continue collecting tokens on the path toward the huge dirt mound blocking the road in the Florida Keys. The first five token fights were simple because the enemy deckmasters and their guards seemed frozen until approached, allowing Carl, Donut, and Mongo to kill them before any cards could matter. The victories give useful experience, bringing Carl to level 68, Donut to level 59, and Mongo to level 40, but Carl remains uneasy about what waits on top of the mound.

At the base of the mound, the sixth opponent is a level-65 Reef Explorer in a glowing dive suit, accompanied by four level-50 Swordfish Interlopers. Carl’s holy-water bomb is knocked off course by one swordfish, which then launches itself at him like a missile and embeds itself in the ground when Carl dodges. The Reef Explorer begins playing cards, summoning additional swordfish totems and buffing one with Precision, while Mongo intercepts another flying swordfish and triggers Earthquake, knocking several enemies down.

Donut then summons her newest combo totem, created from Uzi Jesus and Asojano: Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang. The dramatic, diseased, bazooka-wielding level-140 figure annihilates the swordfish with a swarm of metallic beetles fired from his weapon. Donut also summons Raul the crab and, despite Lazarus wanting to finish the fight himself, orders Lazarus to protect her while Raul gains experience by pursuing the ghost-class Reef Explorer.

Donut boosts Raul with Greased Lightning, and Raul catches the fleeing Reef Explorer, severs his leg, and kills him before another card can be played. After combat ends, Carl studies Lazarus-A-Bang-Bang’s card and learns that the totem is a ranged, healing, affliction-dealing mob with a long duration, many abilities, and the ability to resurrect totems, though lower constitution and fewer utility slots than the original cards. Carl finds the card extremely powerful but unsettling, especially given its attitude and rivalry with Donut’s other strong totems.

Donut examines the Reef Explorer’s dropped cards and dismisses his deck as badly built because it contains too many Precision utility cards and few practical options. Carl realizes the fight was more dangerous than it seemed because stacked Precision buffs could have made a swordfish attack nearly unavoidable. With Carl’s Scavenger’s Daughter soul bar almost full and the mound looming above them, Carl decides they should return to the saferoom to check in, refresh buffs, and then climb before the eroding mound washes away.
