Chapter 12
Overview
Carl and Donut arrive for Shadow Boxer, where the presence of Harbinger, the caprid liaison tied to a previous attempt on Carl’s life, turns a media appearance into a tense and legally fraught encounter. Rosetta Thagra’s identity as a former crawler and possible cookbook contributor raises Carl’s anxiety, while Donut’s interview unexpectedly becomes a thoughtful conversation about media and culture.
Quasar uses a brief opening to update Carl on Faction Wars, revealing that Carl’s side has gained a chaotic advantage after their castle devastated the Lemig battlefield. The chapter ends by shifting the interview’s focus to Carl’s past, as Rosetta confronts him with images of his parents and opens with the subject of his dead mother.
Summary
Carl and Donut are briefly transferred through the space station and then down to the underwater production trailer. In the familiar green room, Zev waits with a towering holographic caprid liaison from the Plenty. Carl immediately challenges the goat creature about the earlier attempt to have Maggie My kill them, and the creature’s untranslated, demonic-sounding speech heightens the tension.
Quasar abruptly appears and orders the liaison not to speak to Carl. Zev explains that because Shadow Boxer is owned by the Open Intellect Pacifist Network, Valtay rules require a liaison to be present when crawlers meet a sponsor. Quasar identifies the caprid as Harbinger, the same liaison connected to the Maggie My and Skull Empire plot, and argues that his presence is improper. When Zev names the showrunner as Rosetta Thagra, Carl is shaken, suspecting she may be the Rosetta associated with the ninth edition of the cookbook.
A note attributed to Crawler Rosetta expresses horror at how crawlers are treated as unreal and vows accountability if Rosetta ever escapes. The interview begins with Rosetta Thagra, a pale Crest former crawler and game guide who recently left indentureship and now runs Shadow Boxer. Donut initially resists Rosetta’s questions by correcting the show’s visual references, especially around Gossip Girl, but Rosetta adapts and offers Donut a chance to select better screencaps.
During Donut’s segment, Rosetta asks about television, culture, and how shows shaped Donut’s view of the world. Donut warms to Rosetta, and the discussion becomes unexpectedly engaging. Zev, Quasar, and Harbinger watch from the dark; Harbinger remains silent and imposing while Rosetta avoids asking Carl anything.
Between interviews, while Donut reviews images for the production, Quasar privately rushes Carl through a Faction Wars update. Carl’s team castle landed in the middle of the Lemig Sortion’s battlefield and crushed much of their army; Zerzura-created ghouls remain a problem, but most of Carl’s army escaped and began settling into their battlefield. Quasar also reports that the Lemigs are using the damaged elf castle, their grievance failed, Signet’s tattoo memory golems remain active, Tina is still an allosaurus, the changelings are building Carl’s stronghold, Ferdinand moved to the city after losing his hat, and Carl’s side will need as many survivors as possible.
Harbinger growls at Quasar’s briefing, but Quasar insists Carl’s sponsor status allows it. The screens then switch from Donut’s media images to photos of Carl, including an unfamiliar picture of Carl as a teenager holding a baby goat and a wedding photo of Carl’s parents. The image of Carl’s parents triggers a painful memory of the fish tank in Carl’s childhood home. Rosetta returns in a new outfit, winks at Carl, and begins Carl’s interview by saying they should talk about Carl’s dead mother.
