Chapter 6

Overview

Carl and Donut deepen their cautious alliance with Sister Ines, Paz, and Anton while learning their classes, beliefs, and team dynamics. Examining a monk seal triggers a new quest involving a brewing war between monk seals and land crabs, expanding the floor’s conflicts beyond simple monster capture.

The group successfully captures Yago, a powerful kung fu monk seal, as a T’Ghee card for Team Sister Ines after a dangerous fight that nearly overwhelms Paz. The card’s strength convinces Carl that his squad needs a monk seal too, just as another seal arrives and offers the chance to repeat the attempt.

Summary

Carl, Donut, Mongo, Sister Ines, Paz, and Anton walk toward a quieter rocky beach where the monk seals gather. The two groups remain wary, but Donut’s chatter and Mongo’s friendly reaction to Paz help ease tension. Paz laughs off Mongo knocking him over, while Sister Ines reinforces her group’s rule that they do not pry into each other’s pasts.

As the group approaches the beach, Carl asks about Sister Ines’s squad. Sister Ines explains that she is a poet laureate, a bard healer who uses poems and prayers; Paz is a Santero, a necromancer cleric with healing, protection, and tanking abilities; and Anton is a fugitive, a rogue class good at traps and escapes. Sister Ines also reveals that Paz and Anton worship Ogun for protection spells, while she refuses to worship a false god, and she already knows Carl is tied to Emberus.

The group finds a lone monk seal named Yago, a level 70 picket sentry. Examining Yago triggers a new quest, The Chowder War, which forces Carl into the conflict between the Monk Seals and the Red Maníseros Land Crabs. The quest frames the seals as defenders of sacred waters against migrating crabs, and Paz clarifies that the real crab migration exists but the dungeon’s version is exaggerated and absurd. Carl sets the quest aside so they can focus on capturing the seal as a card.

They form a plan: Sister Ines, Donut, and Anton attack from range, Paz tanks with his Turtle ability, and Carl approaches invisibly with Sister Ines’s flag to capture Yago once its health drops low enough. The fight quickly proves dangerous. Yago moves with unnatural speed, uses kung fu-style attacks, hammers Paz’s shell with crushing body slams, shrugs off damage, and then activates a deflecting protection that blocks ranged attacks and removes debuffs.

When Paz is trapped in Turtle form and nearly out of protection, Carl rushes in, punches Yago, and draws the seal’s attention. Paz’s Turtle ability ends just in time for Paz to strike Yago with a massive mace, knocking the seal onto Carl. With Yago’s health low, Carl stabs Sister Ines’s flag into the seal, converting it into an uncommon T’Ghee totem card owned by Team Sister Ines.

The card reveals Yago as an aquatic melee tank with a sixty-second summoning duration, high constitution, and notable abilities including Kung Fu Master, Body Slam, Earthquake, and Deflector. Carl realizes his own squad definitely wants one. As Carl hands the card to Sister Ines, Donut warns that another monk seal, Geraldo, is charging toward them, and Carl asks if they want to try again.
