Chapter 2

Overview

Carl and Donut regroup in the saferoom, where Mordecai’s new cyclops form and Samantha’s unexplained growth in power signal that the new floor is already unstable. The group also confirms that Carl and Donut successfully triggered a war, though they do not yet understand the responsibilities that come with it.

The chapter focuses on rewards from the skipped seventh floor and the Butcher’s Masquerade. Donut receives major upgrades, including stronger charm tools, fire immunity benefits, and a dangerous undead-armor summoning spell, while Carl reveals he has earned a rare Celestial Predator Box that remains unopened.

Summary

Carl and Donut enter the saferoom and find Mordecai with Bomo. Mordecai has been transformed into a Hills Cyclops, a large pink one-eyed noncombatant form he dislikes but considers better than some previous forced forms. Donut complains that she missed a seventh-floor spellbook delivery, then learns the available book is Mute, a useful anti-caster spell.

Mongo is released and acts upset, while Samantha returns from the training room fully restored from her recent injuries. Mordecai privately warns Carl that Samantha is becoming more powerful in ways a withering spirit should not, especially because she flew back to the saferoom and keeps demanding the flesh golem body in Carl’s inventory. Samantha insists Carl find a pulpmancer to animate the body and threatens Carl’s mother when Carl refuses to rush.

Donut and Carl discuss whether Prepotente will be punished for breaking the seventh floor. Mordecai explains that the floor’s failure was likely the engineers’ fault because they built the level too closely to its source fairytale, and that the Apothecary and the Plenty may have profited through the political setup. Mordecai then notices Donut’s war indicator, realizes Carl and Donut successfully triggered a war, and asks about their warlord adjutant, which neither of them understands.

Carl reviews a large backlog of achievements and boxes from the previous floor and the Butcher’s Masquerade. His major rewards include boxes for encountering Queen Imogen, being the top hand collector, surviving a god’s mark, killing the last hunter, surviving a four-way boss battle, skipping the floor quickly, pacifism, and mass shared rewards. The most important reveal is that Carl received a Celestial Predator Box for killing the final hunter.

Donut opens her many boxes first. She receives potions, gear, a free town upgrade coupon, a skill upgrade for Love Vampire, an improved fur brush, a Cosmic Buff potion that raises her dexterity, a mercenary coupon, a jeweler’s gem for upgrading her tiara, a powerful fire-protection nipple ring for quadruped females, and a dangerous fire berserker spell attached to it. She also receives and learns Legionnaires of the Damned, a summoning spell that animates recently removed weapons or armor with undead spirits, which Mordecai says pairs especially well with her Laundry Day spell.

Mordecai concludes that Donut’s rewards are unusually strong, likely because the AI is compensating for the skipped floor and because the Valtay are increasing difficulty. Donut is disappointed that she received nothing for Mongo and no celestial box, but Mordecai says her new item and spell are nearly celestial in value. The chapter ends with Mordecai turning attention to Carl’s unopened rewards.
