Chapter 14
Overview
Carl’s group executes a dangerous night run through the ghommid-filled cemetery using stun bombs, Bomo’s missile armor, and Asojano’s temporary path to reach the temple. The escape earns Carl a rare splitter ghommid card, but the apparent shrine-repair quest immediately turns into a divine conflict.
Inside La Iglesia de los Olvidados, Asojano prepares the Sun of Reawakening for his own shrine, only for Ogun to command Paz and Anton to repair a different shrine instead. This forces the party to consider betraying or killing Asojano before the ritual can be completed.
Summary
Carl explains the plan to Paz, Anton, and Sister Ines: the group will exit into the cemetery at night, use a wide-area stun bomb on the ghommids, run to Asojano’s temple, and protect Paz while Paz repairs the shrine. Carl has also prepared Bomo with heavy, breakaway armor and shoulder-mounted missiles made from modified stun and anti-undead devices. Sister Ines worries that empowering Asojano may make him dangerous, and Carl admits Mordecai shares that concern.
After a supply run by Li Na’s team and help from Mordecai, Carl arms the group and opens the door. The night ghommids glow blue, shriek, and surge toward Paz. Carl’s stun bomb freezes many behind them, but Paz is repeatedly struck by a Terrified debuff and cannot move, so Carl orders Bomo to carry him after Paz unequips his heavy breastplate.
The group runs along the path Asojano has cleared, trying not to get too close to the diseased glow around the former god. Bomo fires stun missiles to open gaps, Donut briefly boosts the party’s dexterity with a bard song before losing the effect, and Carl and Donut fight off ghommids that resist the stun. Near the temple, Anton trips, Sister Ines protects him, and a stronger donkey-headed ghommid attacks.
Carl uses Daughter’s Kiss on the donkey-headed ghommid, but instead of dying cleanly, the creature splits into multiple hostile pieces. Sister Ines nearly kills the fast donkey-snake form before it terrifies Carl, rooting him in place. Carl uses a flag like a dagger as it lunges, capturing it as a rare T’Ghee totem card named Skylar Spinach, and the impact knocks Carl into La Iglesia de los Olvidados, ending combat.
Inside the ruined temple, Asojano says his spell is keeping the ghommids out temporarily and that he is stronger there. Donut’s torch reveals the decayed interior, seven broken shrines, and Asojano’s rubble-like shrine. Asojano conjures the Sun of Reawakening, a hot skull-shaped gem, and tells everyone not to touch it until Paz repairs Asojano’s shrine.
As Carl examines another broken shrine, its pieces glow, and Paz and Anton receive a quest from their god Ogun. Ogun orders them to repair his shrine instead of Asojano’s, warning that they will be smited if they refuse. Anton identifies the shrine as a blacksmith’s anvil, and Carl decides the group may have to kill Asojano while Paz and Anton repair Ogun’s shrine; the chapter ends as music begins.
