Chapter 18

Overview

Carl and Donut's bomb successfully kills the neighborhood boss and levels them both to eight, but the victory is morally tainted when Carl learns goblin babies and other noncombatants were inside. The explosion destroys the workshop and blocks access to the boss chamber, preventing Carl and Donut from retrieving the neighborhood map.

With returning goblins closing in, Carl abandons the area and leads Donut into unexplored territory, shifting their immediate goal from looting to escape and survival. Carl's guilt contrasts sharply with Donut's enthusiasm, deepening the difference in how they process the dungeon's violence.

Summary

The explosion knocks Carl and Donut down but does not injure them. The blast is larger than Carl expected, and after hissing, steam, and smaller secondary explosions subside, notifications confirm that the neighborhood boss is dead. Both Carl and Donut gain another bronze star and reach level eight.

Carl asks whether Donut truly saw babies in the boss room. Donut says there were goblin babies, old goblins, and pregnant goblins inside, and she treats the outcome as justified because they are goblins and Carl did not choose to be in the dungeon. Carl, however, is disturbed by the deaths and feels guilty rather than triumphant.

Carl decides they must return to the destroyed workshop, recover the neighborhood map if possible, and leave before the other goblins come back. When Carl and Donut reach the site, the workshop has been reduced to blackened rubble. A wall of fire blocks the northern side, the steam engine boiler is ruptured, water covers the floor, and smoke is being drawn upward by the dungeon's ventilation.

The heat and flames make it impossible to reach the boss chamber or the dead boss, meaning Carl and Donut cannot recover the map. Carl is privately relieved because Carl does not want to see the dead goblin children. When Carl sees white dots approaching on the minimap, Carl realizes the returning goblins will likely become hostile once they discover what happened.

Carl plots an escape route through unexplored territory toward another artery, hoping to find a safer place to rest, review the new achievements, and eventually use the chopper to locate the stairs. As they jog away, Donut admits that she enjoys when Carl blows things up.
