Chapter 3
Overview
Carl secures the Tutorial Guild Hall by returning outside and killing the remaining goblins, but the Goblin Murder Dozer explodes and nearly kills him. Back inside, Mordecai shifts from irritated host to reluctant guide, revealing that he was once a crawler from another destroyed world and that the dungeon is part of a broader system targeting “human-seeded” worlds.
The chapter changes Carl’s immediate situation from pure survival to orientation: he has won temporary safety, but learns Earth’s disaster is not unique and that the dungeon has deep, alien rules he must understand quickly.
Summary
Inside the Tutorial Guild Hall, Carl learns it is a safe zone, though the floor timer remains active. The guildmaster, Mordecai, is revealed as a level 50 Rat Hooligan and non-combatant NPC. Mordecai regrets letting Carl and Princess Donut inside, especially after Donut knocks over an urn containing Mordecai’s mother’s ashes.
Carl asks whether the goblins outside will wait for him. Mordecai explains that at least one goblin may summon its clan because Carl killed a goblin, so Carl decides he cannot leave the threat alive. Carl rushes back outside before Mordecai can lock the door.
Outside, the Goblin Murder Dozer has crashed into the wall while the two remaining goblins are distracted. Carl climbs onto the machine, throws one goblin into the spinning blades, then fights the goblin engineer. The engineer reveals Carl is speaking “Syndicate Standard,” not English, because the system has programmed the language into Carl’s mind.
Carl uses the engineer’s cooking pot as a weapon, knocks the goblin off the machine, and jumps down onto him, crushing him. The Murder Dozer then warns of an imminent boiler breach, forcing Carl to sprint back into the guild hall. The explosion shakes even the protected guild door, but Carl survives because he is behind the safe-zone barrier.
Afterward, Carl demands answers about the dungeon, Earth’s destruction, and the game-like system. Mordecai explains that he was once a crawler from another displaced world, reached floor 11, and became a guildmaster after accepting an exit option. He reveals his original species was skyfowl, that he became a Changeling on floor three, and that his form changes whenever his guildhall moves.
Mordecai begins explaining the wider situation: each dungeon is custom-built for the world it inhabits, the system localizes its notifications for authenticity, and Earth is not the first human-seeded world to be used this way. Seeing Carl’s confusion, Mordecai offers to give him the quick version and tells him to sit down.
