Chapter 47

Overview

Carl and Donut spend the final hours of the second floor turning Mongo from a hostile reward creature into Donut’s officially bonded pet, completing the bond only after Donut saves Mongo from being eaten. Mordecai prepares them for the third floor’s race and class choices, emphasizing that survival, power, and audience appeal may not always align.

The chapter also introduces a new mystery around Agatha when Carl discovers forbidden Valtay technology had been hidden in her shopping cart. Agatha’s cryptic behavior and a coinciding feed outage suggest forces beyond Carl’s understanding are moving inside the dungeon just as Carl, Donut, and Mongo descend.

Summary

Carl and Donut spend the rest of the second floor trying to make Mongo bond with Donut, while their audience numbers surge because viewers enjoy the chaos of Mongo repeatedly biting Donut. Carl ignores Zev’s advice to stop using the slingshot and trains it to level five, discovering it can knock brindled vespas out of the air so Donut can finish them with magic missiles.

Carl and Donut ask Mordecai about Mongo, and Mordecai explains that they must first remove the pet’s automatic hostility before true bonding can begin. Mordecai then outlines what will happen on the third floor: Carl and Donut will choose races, classes, and stat allocations, with options influenced by the system AI, ratings considerations, and Earth-specific classes. Mordecai also reveals that his own brother was once a crawler, though he refuses to discuss it further.

After Mongo escapes his cage, Donut finds the frightened creature, and Mongo runs to Donut before biting her nose again. Carl later realizes from a recap show that Mongo is a pack hunter, so Carl has Donut teach Mongo to kill grubs alongside Donut. After several kills, Mongo’s minimap dot turns white, meaning Mongo is no longer automatically hostile, though Mongo still remains reckless and unbonded.

Mordecai confirms Carl and Donut are on the right path but warns that if Mongo is not bonded before the floor collapses, Donut cannot bring Mongo with her. Carl and Donut train Mongo with commands and food rewards, gradually teaching restraint. With the stair timer running down, they fight brindled vespas, reach level 13, and finally allow Mongo to help finish grounded enemies.

Just outside the stair chamber, a nearly dead vespa grabs Mongo and nearly eats him. Donut reacts with desperate speed, kills the vespa, and the emotional rescue completes the bond: Mongo becomes Donut’s level-one pet and receives the title Royal Steed. Mongo celebrates with Donut, then bites Donut’s nose again.

While waiting near the stairs, Carl uses his new inventory history tab and discovers that Agatha’s shopping cart once contained illegal or high-value Valtay technology: a communication device, a personal shield, and a pulse pistol. Agatha then appears alive, still pushing the cart, and warns Carl off with cryptic comments before descending during a brief feed outage. Disturbed by the mystery but unable to solve it, Carl waits for the timer and leads Donut and Mongo toward the third floor.
