Chapter 30

Overview

Carl and Donut begin exploring the second floor, quickly finding the third-floor stairwell, signs of Agatha’s passage, and new dungeon ecology: corpses feed Brindle Grubs into worse threats. They secure a sparse safe room after fighting dingoes and Mind Horrors, then process major rewards that strengthen Carl’s unarmed build and give Donut a new source of magic. Donut’s mailed spellbook introduces necromancy through Second Chance, shifting from disgust to enthusiasm once Carl frames it as a way to weaponize dead dogs.

Summary

Carl and Donut arrive on the second floor with no views, followers, or favorites yet, and Carl assumes the numbers will activate after the recap episode and Odette’s show. Carl wants to find a safe room before public attention surges, because Carl recognizes that popularity may improve their survival odds but also fears losing the protection of anonymity.

The second floor resembles the first but has white floors, orange lichen, and cinderblock walls. Carl and Donut spot the stairwell to the third floor on the map and decide to clear toward it, but soon find a dead Brindle Grub killed by Agatha. After reading that grubs eat corpses and grow into more dangerous forms, Carl begins destroying remains to prevent the grubs from feeding, even though Donut finds the practice revolting.

As Carl and Donut move through the halls, Donut detects monsters slightly before Carl’s map updates. They encounter Danger Dingoes, doglike level-five monsters, and Donut reacts with instant fury, burning nearly all her mana to kill them. Afterward, Donut rips the corpses apart despite earlier objections, and Carl decides not to push deeper into the dingo area because kobolds and greater danger may be nearby.

Carl and Donut retreat, killing many grubs and following Donut’s sense of a nearby safe room. To reach it, they pass into a quadrant filled with floating Mind Horrors, whose psionic attacks give Carl painful headaches but do not affect Donut. The monsters are physically weak, so Carl knocks them down and clears a path to a large storm-shelter-like safe room with bathrooms, showers, cots, televisions, and a mysterious mailbox Carl cannot open.

Inside the safe room, Carl reviews achievements and loot from recent battles. Carl receives boxes for boss-related achievements, taking Agatha’s shopping cart, battlefield construction, and bare-foot boss kills. The loot includes gold, drink tickets for the Desperado Club, the Goo-Inator 3000 shaping tool, a temporary Cheat Code Potion that raises Carl’s Pugilism to level 10, and an enchanted pedicure kit that boosts bare-foot attacks and foot-triggered trap awareness.

Donut then uses the mailbox because a boss-box reward has enrolled Donut in the Dungeon Book of the Floor Club, granting one mailed spellbook per level. Donut immediately reads the book without checking it and learns Second Chance, a necromancy spell that briefly raises a lower-level dead monster to fight for them. Donut initially finds the spell disgusting, but when Carl suggests using zombie dingoes against other dingoes, Donut decides it is the best spell ever.
