Chapter 24
Overview
Carl and Donut defeat the gym-themed neighborhood boss, the Juicer, after a brutal fight that forces Carl to rely on fog scrolls, improvised weapons, and hand-to-hand combat instead of explosives. Donut saves Carl from being strangled by mauling the boss's neck, but she is nearly killed in the process, deepening the chapter's emphasis on their mutual dependence. The victory clears another major threat and leaves them ready to loot, though the fight exposes dangerous limits around mana, healing, and potion cooldowns.
Summary
Carl and Donut enter a gym-themed neighborhood boss room. A level-two troglodyte at the reception counter hisses at them, and Donut kills it with a low-powered magic missile to conserve mana. The doors seal, the boss music starts, and Carl sees six level-three Troglodyte Bashers, three Virtuosos, and the level-nine neighborhood boss: the Juicer, a grotesquely over-muscled troglodyte bodybuilder.
The Juicer immediately attacks by throwing flaming weight plates, making the small gym too dangerous for Carl to use dynamite. Carl activates a scroll of Confusing Fog, blinding the monsters, and follows the plan: Carl focuses on the support enemies while Donut uses stronger magic missiles on the boss. Carl kills the Bashers during the first fog burst, but the fog fades quickly, and a thrown weight injures Carl before he casts Heal and uses a second fog scroll.
While Donut dodges flaming weights and poisonous Virtuoso tongues, Carl charges the Virtuosos. One bites onto Carl's arm after Carl grabs its tongue, but Carl uses the attached creature as a grotesque weapon while killing the remaining Virtuosos. With the support enemies dead, the Juicer is badly damaged but still dangerous, forcing Carl to use his final fog scroll and drink a health potion after shrapnel wounds him.
Carl attacks the blinded Juicer from behind with a lopsided barbell and then repeatedly smashes the boss with a heavy weight plate. Just as the Juicer nears death, the boss grabs Carl's wrist and neck and begins crushing him. Donut, nearly out of mana, saves Carl by leaping onto the Juicer's back, biting into his neck, and tearing open a major vein, but the Juicer swats Donut into a wall and critically injures her.
Carl finishes the almost-dead Juicer with a weak punch and crushes the boss's head, then rushes to Donut, who is barely alive with a broken leg. Carl's Heal Critter scroll fails because Donut is not a valid target, and Carl tests potion cooldown rules on himself, learning that drinking too early causes poison that his resistance nullifies. Donut begins healing naturally, then uses her own health potion and theatrically claims she is dying before Carl tells her to get up and help loot the room.
