Chapter 45

Overview

Carl and Donut discover that the kobold boss room is a fighting kennel where abused danger dingoes have been forced into combat. By feeding the imprisoned dingoes instead of killing them, Carl turns a deadly trap into an advantage, allowing the dingoes to destroy the kobolds and neutralize the boss’s first attack.

The chapter reinforces that dungeon survival depends on reading hidden mechanics, not just brute force. Ralph the Frenzied Gerbil proves deceptively dangerous, surviving being swallowed and forcing Carl to personally finish the fight.

Summary

Carl and Donut follow painfully loud metal music through the kobold quadrant, killing kobolds, dingoes, and brindle grubs along the way until both reach level 12. Their chat banter continues despite the noise, and the music leads them to a boss chamber built like a municipal dog pound, with cages lining three long hallways.

Inside the kennel, Carl notices that many danger dingoes are imprisoned, injured, and strangely passive despite remaining hostile on the minimap. Remembering Mordecai’s advice to look for clues in boss rooms, Carl refuses to kill the caged dingoes for easy experience. Instead, Carl feeds one a pet biscuit, and its minimap dot turns white, proving that kindness can break the kobolds’ control. Carl and Donut repeat the process for fourteen dingoes.

Before Carl can begin his planned boom-jug attack, the music stops, the chamber seals behind them, and the boss battle begins. Carl throws a lit boom jug at the opening barn doors, just as dozens of cheering kobolds emerge with a dressed-up handler carrying a tiny cage. The boss is revealed to be Ralph, a level 11 Frenzied Gerbil with immense speed, rage, and a grotesquely huge mouth.

When time resumes, Carl ducks Ralph’s initial attack while the boom jug destroys most of the kobolds, including Ralph’s handler. Donut damages Ralph with a magic missile, but a wounded kobold opens all the dingo cages. Because Carl fed the dingoes, they remain friendly to Carl and Donut; the one-eyed dingo swallows Ralph, while the other dingoes quickly tear apart the remaining kobolds.

The apparent victory proves incomplete when the boss music continues. The rescued dingoes gather near the exit, but the one-eyed dingo freezes and whines before its head explodes. Ralph bursts out alive and attacks Carl’s throat, but Carl is ready and punches the gerbil hard enough to leave Ralph stunned and near death. Donut jokes that Carl’s bare, shiny foot is suited for killing a small rodent, and Carl places his foot on Ralph to finish the fight.
