Chapter 36

Overview

Zev, a real Borant admin, arrives to become Carl and Donut’s PR agent, confirming that their growing popularity now binds them more tightly to the dungeon’s entertainment machine. Carl’s anger exposes the moral horror of being forced to perform survival, while Zev and Mordecai reveal that Borant and the kua-tin Party are also under desperate political and financial pressure.

Donut’s shared television fandom with Zev creates an unlikely connection, but Mordecai’s warning makes clear that admins remain dangerous. As Carl prepares to resume the mission, the changed map and flood of grubs signal that the dungeon threat has already shifted.

Summary

Carl’s HUD and menus vanish as a real Borant Corporation dungeon admin appears in Mordecai’s safe room. The admin, Zev, is a tiny female kua-tin in a bulky water-filled suit. Mordecai initially treats Zev with fear and formality, then relaxes when he realizes Zev is not wearing a Party badge.

Zev explains that Carl and Donut have become popular enough to be assigned a PR agent through the Crawler Assisted Outreach Program. Interview requests will now go through Zev, and Odette has already secured the right to interview Carl and Donut at every floor opening. Zev also plans to schedule additional appearances, including a round-table show that offers crawlers a parting gift.

When Zev suggests Carl and Donut should time major battles to maximize audience interest, Carl loses his temper. Carl tells Zev that the crawlers are fighting for their lives, not voluntarily performing for entertainment, and refuses to shape their survival around Borant’s schedule. Zev responds that everyone in the system is afraid: Carl and Donut, the dungeon mobs, Mordecai, and even Zev, whose family could be destroyed if Zev angers Party superiors.

Donut unexpectedly defuses the tension by comparing the confrontation to Gossip Girl. Zev turns out to be a fan of Earth television, and Donut bonds with Zev over the show. While Zev and Donut talk, Mordecai warns Carl that even a low-level admin can destroy Carl and explains that the Party, also called the Bloom, is a dangerous ultra-nationalist kua-tin political force.

Mordecai reveals that Borant’s government is pressuring the company to end the dungeon season quickly. Borant needs the game to be profitable but also needs the money soon, while the committee is already watching Borant because of dangerous irregularities. Carl decides to return to clearing the quadrant and help Team Meadow Lark reach the stairs before the next recap episode.

Zev leaves, Carl’s HUD returns, and Carl opens the door back to the dungeon. The minimap has changed color, and a waist-high pile of grubs spills into the safe room, ending the chapter on a sudden new threat.
