Chapter 43
Overview
The Maestro tries to recover control of Death Watch by exposing Frank and Maggie’s history as player killers and forcing a confrontation with Carl and Donut. The footage reveals that Carl’s rat-corpse trap injured their daughter Yvette, but Maggie killed the girl herself, deepening Carl’s guilt while confirming Frank and Maggie as dangerous enemies.
The chapter also expands the ninth-floor threat: the Maestro belongs to the powerful Skull Clan and plans to fight there, while Donut’s Blood Sultanate crown may endanger the party. The Maestro’s gift of an upgraded crawler-tracking potion gives Maggie and Frank the means to hunt Carl and Donut directly.
Summary
After Carl and Donut humiliate the Maestro, the show replays their escape from the level 93 rage elemental. The crowd loves the footage, while the Maestro rants off-mic. Carl reassures Donut that his anger is partly an act meant to provoke the host, though Donut worries about being hated.
The Maestro confronts Carl and Donut privately while the audience watches the muted replay. Carl draws him into boasting about his background, learning that the Maestro belongs to the Skull Clan, not the Blood Sultanate. The Maestro reveals that Donut’s tiara has tied her to the Blood Sultanate and that the clan is usually eliminated early on the ninth floor, where he intends to appear as War Leader Maestro of the Skull Clan.
The Maestro then introduces two surprise guests: Frank Q and Maggie My. A recap exposes their dungeon history, showing that their Mind Horror guide told them to survive by killing other crawlers. Frank and Maggie murdered Rebecca W’s group and other vulnerable crawlers for loot and experience while their daughter Yvette resisted taking part.
The footage reveals that Yvette was hidden in the safe room when Carl left dynamite inside the rat corpse as a trap. Frank triggered the explosive, injuring himself, Maggie, and Yvette; afterward Maggie strangled her injured daughter, claiming Carl does not know the whole story. Carl is horrified to realize his trap caused Yvette’s injuries, but he condemns Maggie for killing her and tells both Frank and Maggie that humans would have been stronger together.
Maggie tries to stab Carl, but the show’s barrier stops her. The Maestro attempts to turn the confrontation into drama, asking leading questions, but Maggie only curses, Frank remains broken and silent, Carl refuses to perform, and Donut mocks the host directly to the audience. The interview collapses as the crowd loses interest.
For parting gifts, the Maestro gives Carl tactical boots and socks, a pointed insult because Carl’s barefoot buffs make boots useless. Carl refuses to take the bait. The Maestro then gives Frank and Maggie a Legendary Skill Potion that can upgrade Find Crawler so they can locate any named crawler anywhere, turning their grudge into a direct future threat. Carl leaves by taunting the Maestro about the ninth floor, while Maggie smiles for the first time as she clutches the potion.
