Chapter 22
Overview
Carl and Donut find the source of the signs: a desperate group of eldercare workers protecting frail residents near the borough-boss maze. Brandon’s account reveals how the dungeon trapped the facility’s survivors, killed many of their helpers, and left the remaining caretakers with an almost impossible duty.
Rather than abandon them or keep searching for easier stairs, Carl commits to preparing for a direct assault on the maze boss. The decision reframes the next objective from simple escape to a risky rescue mission for people who cannot survive the dungeon alone.
Summary
Carl and Donut follow the signs around the spiral-maze area and find an encampment of about forty crawlers near a drawbridge into the maze. Carl is initially encouraged by the number of blue dots, but most of the group are extremely elderly, level-one residents in wheelchairs or walkers. The able-bodied defenders are Brandon An, Brandon’s quiet brother Chris Andrews 2, Yolanda Martinez, and Imani C.; Imani is level 10 and marked as a crawler killer with twelve kills.
Brandon explains that the group came from an eldercare facility in Wenatchee. Agatha, a homeless woman, accidentally started a fire outside the building, forcing staff to evacuate about 250 residents into the cold just as the dungeon entrance opened in the street. When Agatha pushed her shopping cart toward the entrance, the stairs transformed into a ramp, allowing wheelchairs and carts down, but some people who fell in vanished, and others were eventually trapped inside when the entrance stopped letting them leave.
Brandon says only thirty-eight people remain. Police, firefighters, and other staff who entered the maze or went searching for easier stairs later disappeared or died, apparently picked off one by one. A nearby safe room, a Waffle House run by a singing gnome, is already full of more mobile residents who voted to stay there, while the frailest survivors remain in the hallway. Brandon also explains that dungeon healing removed many illnesses and medication needs but did not restore youth, strength, or lost cognitive function.
Carl studies the large gate into the maze and asks about plans. Brandon says the original hope was to gather enough crawlers to storm the spiral and reach the stairs, but they do not know what the borough boss is and cannot beat it alone. Carl proposes building a bomb to damage the monster without entering, but Yolanda explains the smaller openings are sealed by a blue-glowing barrier, and the monster does not enter the first chamber beyond the main gate, meaning any attack likely requires being locked inside.
Carl considers leaving to search for other stairs, but the helpless residents and the loyalty of their caretakers change his mind. After learning about nearby rest areas, cleared quadrants, training guilds, previous neighborhood bosses, and poisonous lizard monsters near a Peruvian Taco Bell, Carl forms a plan. Carl and Donut will spend the day grinding and improving skills, watch the next recap episode, rest, then return with Brandon, Chris, Yolanda, and Imani to fight the borough boss and get the residents to the second floor.
