Chapter 28
Overview
Carl and Donut are pulled from the dungeon flow into a private intergalactic talk show, where Lexis prepares them for a holographic interview with the famous host Odette. Donut proves unexpectedly skilled at media performance, winning over the alien audience while Carl feels exposed, manipulated, and out of place.
The chapter shifts Donut from survivor-sidekick into public celebrity, revealing that audience approval may become a new temptation and liability. Carl recognizes that the dungeon's dangers now include not only monsters, but also fame, production politics, and public narrative control.
Summary
Carl and Donut arrive in a production trailer on Earth's surface, still technically inside the game but unable to use their menus. Lexis explains that they will appear on Dungeon Crawler After Hours with Odette, a massive private program separate from the official crawl broadcast, and that the studio, audience, and host will be holographic except for the couch and the trailer staff.
Donut immediately treats the situation as a professional media appearance, asking about tone, censorship, and whether the show is live or taped. Carl is uneasy, explores the trailer for a possible way out, and warns Donut that the producers are not their friends, but Donut insists that public performance is her world and asks Carl to let her handle the interview.
Lexis sends them onto the set, where a holographic alien audience erupts. Carl is stunned by the scale of the set, the variety of alien spectators, and Odette's bizarre crab-like, insect-headed, humanoid form. Donut recovers instantly, performs for the crowd, and takes her place beside Odette with confidence.
Odette opens by focusing on Donut's title, and Donut improvises a polished explanation that frames cat-show titles as an elective feline monarchy. Odette then turns Carl's repeated shout of “Goddamnit, Donut!” into a crowd-pleasing catchphrase, embarrassing Carl with clips from their dungeon fights.
The interview continues with Odette replaying dangerous moments, including the Hoarder fight, and questioning Donut's choices. Donut deflects criticism by praising Carl, joking with the audience, and steering attention toward their victories. When asked about the future, Donut says they plan to stay with Meadow Lark for now and promises viewers that she and Carl will kill enemies with style.
The audience adores Donut's performance, and Carl realizes that Donut is intoxicated by the cheers and attention. As the interview ends, Carl worries that Donut's hunger for fame will become dangerous, muttering his now-famous catchphrase again.
