Chapter 46

Overview

After surviving the kobold kennel boss fight, Carl and Donut discover the arena doubles as a pet reward room with only one usable cage key. Donut pressures Carl into choosing a hostile baby mongoliensis instead of a safer-looking option, creating a new complication rather than an obvious advantage. Mongo’s aggression and lack of bonding make him both a potential asset and an immediate liability for the party.

Summary

After the boss fight ends, the dungeon groans and rumbles while Carl wipes blood from his foot and feels sickened by what just happened. The door opens, and the thirteen danger dingoes flee into the halls. Carl checks the neighborhood map and sees newly generated brindle grubs, which the dingoes kill as they run toward the main artery before disappearing from the map.

Carl and Donut loot the kobold fighting pit area, collecting coins, helmets, a Heal Critter scroll, pet biscuits, the gerbil cage, and a master pen key. The key can open only one cage for a non-kobold, forcing Carl and Donut to choose carefully. In the main arena, they find a bloodstained fighting ring, a pile of bones, chairs to loot, and a row of cages containing possible pet rewards.

The system announces that Carl and Donut have discovered a reward room and specifically a pet reward room. Because the room allows only one choice, Carl worries about the consequences of taking a pet and considers more practical options, such as a brindle grub. Donut, however, becomes fixated on the last cage, which holds a tiny pink-feathered dinosaur-like creature called a mongoliensis.

The mongoliensis is red-tagged and hostile, but Donut pleads to take it, imagining it as a cute interview companion. With the cage timer running out, Carl gives in and opens the cage. The creature bursts out, Carl grabs it, and Donut tries feeding it pet biscuits, but its dot remains red.

Donut discovers the mongoliensis is male and names him Mongo, but Mongo immediately bites Donut on the nose and later clamps onto Donut’s arm. Carl examines Mongo and learns he is a level 1 pet-class mob that has not bonded with a crawler, is nearly impossible to tame, and will attack any mob on sight. Carl worries they must figure out how to bond Mongo before entering Mordecai’s room, while Donut insists she and Mongo are already best friends despite Mongo shrieking at her.
