Chapter 16
Overview
Carl receives the goblin Copper Chopper, a useful but wildly unsafe steam vehicle, along with coal and a cache of explosives. Donut’s bargain reveals its hidden cost when the goblins learn the llamas have drugs and immediately launch a raid, leaving the workshop undefended.
The chapter shifts Carl and Donut from escape preparation into opportunistic looting and a planned boss fight. Carl recognizes both the strategic risk and the ethical ugliness of killing the chieftain after receiving help, but he still chooses the chance for rewards and supplies.
Summary
Carl inspects the goblin-made Copper Chopper and finds it as dangerous and ramshackle as advertised: a human-sized steam bicycle of welded copper, skull seats, loose parts, and a coal-fed engine. A goblin engineer explains that its water source is a permacube, so Carl only needs to feed it coal, but the machine cannot be turned off except by letting the coal run out.
The engineer warns Carl that the chopper can overheat or build too much pressure, and that two similar valves control those problems. Because there are no gauges, Carl must rely on the vehicle’s behavior to know which valve to twist, making the transport useful but risky. Carl also takes advantage of the goblins’ coal supply, secretly collecting three huge stacks of coal for later use.
As Carl and Princess Donut prepare to leave, Rory and Lorelai return intoxicated. Lorelai propositions Carl, but Donut sharply redirects the situation, insisting they are on a schedule. Rory then gives Carl a bag packed with dynamite, bombs, and grenades, which Carl immediately stores in his inventory because of how dangerous the explosives are.
Rory asks Donut where Donut found the drugs promised in their bargain. Donut reveals the drugs came from nearby llamas, causing Rory to realize the llamas have been holding out. The goblins erupt into action, arming themselves, loading murder dozers and choppers, and setting off to attack the llamas, leaving Carl and Donut alone in the workshop.
Carl realizes that Donut deliberately sparked a drug war between the goblins and llamas as part of the deal. With the room abandoned, Carl decides they should loot every useful engineering supply, including wire, cogs, dynamite, and barrels of gunpowder. Donut then presses to fight the goblin chieftain for another boss box, and although Carl knows it is dangerous and morally questionable after the goblins helped them, he agrees.
