Chapter 39
Overview
Trapped in the Big Shot Chicken safe room, Carl, Donut, and Meadow Lark watch the recap turn their disaster with Jack and the Rage Elemental into entertainment. The dungeon’s new rule that safe rooms close one hour before floor collapse destroys Carl’s fallback plan and raises the stakes for the vulnerable group. When grubs fail to distract the Rage Elemental for long, Carl rethinks the situation and begins preparing a new, more urgent plan involving Brandon’s help.
Summary
The chapter opens with the dungeon recap episode sensationalizing Jack’s bathroom violation and the catastrophe it caused. The broadcast shows Jack urinating on the wall, Yolanda killing him, Yolanda’s death, and Carl’s rescue of Mrs. McGibbons while the Rage Elemental attacks. Imani cannot watch, while Donut’s tactless comment about Jack worsens the tension.
Inside the Big Shot Chicken safe room, Carl tries to think while the Rage Elemental continues pounding on the door. Carl has a possible plan using Protective Shell, but the cooldown would require waiting another Syndicate standard day and abandoning Team Meadow Lark. Zev has gone silent after the hallway fight, Donut worries about her, and Carl dreads the required talk show appearance.
Carl and Donut review their new achievements and platinum reward boxes. Donut receives a risky scratch-off ticket that can produce helpful or harmful effects on her next mob attack, while Carl receives a ticket that can randomly cast either a powerful Fireball or healing strawberry custard at the nearest enemy. Donut immediately focuses on custard and orders Qwist, the Bopca Protector, to bring her some.
The recap continues by showing other major crawler stories, including Lucia Mar’s increasing player-killer count and Hekla’s female warrior group, Brynhild’s Daughters. The episode then returns to Carl’s fight, showing Carl’s boom jug damaging the Rage Elemental for nearly a quarter of its health before the monster heals. After the show ends, the system announces that bathroom penalties will remain for the floor, Satan’s Lil’ Hedgehogs have been removed as too strong, grubs are intentionally abundant, and all safe rooms will now close one hour before floor collapse.
The new safe room closure timer devastates Carl and Brandon because sheltering Meadow Lark until collapse is no longer an option. Outside, a mass of grubs briefly draws the Rage Elemental away, but the elemental annihilates them and returns to the door; Carl realizes escape would have failed. Seeing grub pupae near the stairs and remembering both the boom jug’s effect and something Rory once said, Carl abandons the plan to wait for Protective Shell, clears space in the restaurant, dumps supplies and weights from inventory, and asks Brandon for help with a new plan.
