Overview
A flashback underscores Theon’s upbringing under an abusive father and his fixation on control. In the present, Razik and Eliza reveal that Devram’s Source Marks are a perversion of the sacred twin flame bond, which allows linked pairs to communicate and combine power. Believing she can sense Axel, Katya resolves to take the twin flame Mark to find him despite risks. Theon agrees, gives the Shifters one day to respond about Arius holdings in the Underground, and prepares to visit their leaders with Tristyn.
Summary
Fifteen years earlier, Theon rebuffs young Axel’s plea to play, prioritizing study before a summons to their abusive father’s study. Fear of punishment and a drive to control outcomes define Theon’s mindset as Luka arrives and they enter to face the Lord and his advisors.
In the present, Theon takes a tense call from his mother, Cressida, who suspects Tessa in the disappearances of the Arius Lord and Axel. Tristyn Blackheart arrives; they confirm Roan is stable under Cienna’s care and argue over fate and interference.
Katya brings a translation hinting at a mysterious bond. Summoning Razik and Eliza, Theon learns the “Source Marks” in Devram are a desecration of the true twin flame bond, which, when accepted, enables shared emotions, thought-speech, and combined power. Scarlett and Sorin’s and Razik and Eliza’s Marks are examples. Theon realizes someone twisted a sacred Fae–Legacy bond into subjugation.
Eliza explains that if Katya and Axel are twin flames, taking the Mark could let Katya contact or locate Axel. The risk: if unmatched or unreciprocated, the Mark drains the bearer and exposes their soul to predatory beings. Despite this, Katya admits she has intermittently felt Axel’s suffering and insists on taking the Mark.
Theon shares Tessa’s lead that his father holds properties in the Underground’s Leisure District, knowledge controlled by Shifter leaders Kylian and Giselle. He sends a formal request and grants one day for their reply. He reluctantly permits Katya to take the twin flame Mark; if the Shifters do not answer, he will go unannounced and bring Katya to track Axel, requesting Tristyn accompany him.
