Overview
Axel reaches Bree’s House of Four to weather his looming vampyre transition and gauges the clan’s power politics. At dinner, Bree reveals the hidden villas’ hybrid-breeding program; Mansel admits participation with Valter’s Source. Believing Kat dead, they press Axel for loyalty, but Axel secretly commits to protecting Kat and their child.
Summary
After days traveling from Dark Haven to the Underground, Axel arrives at Bree’s House of Four, weary and struggling with light sensitivity and the fear of his impending vampyre transition. In Bree’s armory, she tests boundaries and power dynamics; Axel requests time to adjust, seeking refuge more than alliance.
At a tense dinner with Bree, Julius, Mansel, and other vampyres, Axel is served blood he refuses, signaling his resistance to feeding. Bree probes him for outside news and pivots to the Sirana Villas massacre and the disappearance of many Fae, instructing her clan to hunt them with promises of advancement.
Axel questions Bree’s strategy and learns about the “hidden villas,” where Legacy rulers secretly breed Fae–Legacy hybrids to create stronger Fae and potential Sources. Mansel confirms his involvement with Valter’s Source, implying a likely successful pregnancy and exposing the rulers’ requests for specific “combinations.” Axel’s fury surfaces; he throttles Mansel with shadows to reassert dominance.
The revelations force Axel to consider catastrophic risks to Katya and their unborn child if the Arius–fire Fae pairing is discovered. Bree then presses Axel to pledge loyalty to her house, while Julius taunts him about Kat’s presumed death. Axel realizes Bree expected him to kill Kat in bloodlust after she freed him to “find” her.
Concealing the truth of Kat’s survival, Axel refuses immediate fealty. Internally, he rejects fatalism about his turning, chooses Katya and their child without a bond, and resolves to protect them at any cost, even as the clan believes her dead and angles to claim his strength.
