Overview
Luka negotiates with Lord Rordan Jove to remain in Achaz, agreeing to a binding bargain that includes delivering Theon’s onyx ring and truth about his lineage. Later, Tessa confronts Luka, her unstable storm power surging. Luka refuses to validate her choices, steadies her by presence alone, and she finally sleeps, underscoring fraught loyalties and growing entanglements.
Summary
Luka is intercepted by Achaz sentinels and escorted to Lord Rordan Jove. Expecting suspicion over his Arius bond, Luka proposes staying in Achaz to train Tessa and pursue leads on Axel. Rordan demands truth and trust, so they enter a one-hour truth bargain.
During candid negotiation, Luka argues Tessa’s uncontrolled power is dangerous and requires proper training. Rordan rejects blackmail and sets terms: Luka must answer lineage questions truthfully, swear not to kill Rordan, and deliver Theon’s onyx ring. Luka accepts, gaining permission to remain, and receives a new Bargain Mark.
Later that night, Tessa storms into Luka’s rooms, furious he appealed to Rordan and claiming she cannot help with Axel. Her power flares dangerously as she spirals between purpose and desire. Luka stays calm, labels her refusal a choice, and refuses to validate it. He urges rest, giving her his shirt to ground her, which stills her magic.
Tessa admits she hasn’t slept since before the hearing and insists destiny pits her against Theon. Luka frames responsibility and balance: she sought control and must own the consequences; he will not rescue her unless she asks. Exhausted, Tessa lies beside him and finally sleeps, while Luka accepts the personal risk of his choice to stay.
