49. Tessa

Tessa paces a Pantheon cell infused with raw Chaos, battling shackles and a ring siphoning her power. Theon arrives with Tristyn (a Keeper), recognizing Tessa’s imbalance and the cell’s god-tier containment. To earn trust, Tristyn swears a blood vow to Tessa and uses her blood to break the wards. Theon pulls her free, his darkness and wings steadying her.

Disguised in a Keeper cloak, they reach the foyer where Dagian, Achaz Heir, pointedly allows their passage, calling the moment a genesis. Enchantment limits bar glamours or Travel, forcing a careful, shadowed walk toward Arius territory. At the Wynfell River, Tessa warns she has foreseen an Augury and Hunter ambush and that Luka will not come. Theon removes her suppressors, arms her, and urges her to trust herself as her light tests and tangles with his darkness.

They crest a hill to find dozens of Augury and hovering Hunters. After Theon vows to kill Cordelia if present, he and Tessa share a hard kiss before the charge. With Theon and Tristyn guarding her flanks and wolves Nylah and Roan joining, Tessa unleashes lightning and light. When a Hunter moves to detain her, she infuses her dagger with entwined light and Theon’s darkness, dissolving him into ash—an unprecedented kill.

Theon and Tristyn carve through foes while Tessa’s power grows, but numbers mount. Theon insists Luka will come; Tessa counters he will not. Night Children suddenly flood the field, outpacing Hunters and Legacy alike. Amid the chaos, a vampyre slices Tessa’s back with a god-slaying blade, dropping her to her knees as her magic strains to heal.

Theon drags the vampyre close and tears him apart, raging that Luka is absent. As Tessa struggles to breathe and warn him of another threat, a Hunter drives a gold blade into Theon’s back. The battle rages on, and, as in Tessa’s vision, Luka witnesses but does not intervene.
