Summary
On a dark Sunday, Arthur waits in mounting dread for Tana to collect the stolen books. He can’t focus on his translation work and sits in the kitchen without turning on the light, overwhelmed by guilt and fear. Tana arrives with boneless wings, takes the books, and coolly orders him to have more next Sunday.
Van emerges after she leaves, notices the food, and teases Arthur about needing to relax, pointedly mentioning Gwen Underfoot. Arthur deflects, unsettled by both the theft and Van’s insinuations.
Over the following Fridays, Arthur continues stealing increasingly notable titles, rationalizing some choices. By mid-October, Tana returns for a third pickup, brings a cold Hawaiian pizza, and criticizes the haul as barely worth the gas, citing Jayne. Arthur snaps back that Jayne might be getting cheated by her buyer, provoking Tana’s threat-laced defense of her sister.
Alone again, Arthur picks at the pizza, mulling the absurdity of fruit as a topping and the pressure of his situation. The phone rings: Colin calls without preamble and asks if Arthur wants to see something “really scary,” signaling an imminent and possibly dangerous turn.
